Do they remove under-arm hair?

My DD doesn't, and it's never been mentioned. But I've noticed recently that she always chooses t-shirts with sleeves that cover the tops of her arms, and I wonder if she's self-conscious of her underarm hair.

I don't want to broach the subject in case she feels she "should" remove the hair. I very much feel it's her choice and I'm glad girls nowadays don't feel they have to remove it. But I'm still interested in knowing how widespread it is to not epilate. Thanks

DD14 and yes she shaves her armpits.

DustyTulips · 21/06/2022 18:01

Yes, but she’s a dancer and it’s required / expected. At school, more don’t than do, she tells me.

Scoobyblue · 21/06/2022 18:02

My dd shaved her armpits at that age

I'm in exactly the same boat OP. My 14yo doesn't shave and I'm really proud of her for not bowing to the same pressures that I've bowed to my whole life (shaving, make up etc). My only worry is that she's actually a bit self conscious about it and refuses to wear anything that reveals her legs or underarms. Obviously it's not an issue most of the year but she'll get hot in the summer. I want her to either feel comfortable enough with her body hair that she can wear a vest and shorts and not care or to know that it's also OK to shave if that makes her feel more comfortable in the summer.
I want to talk to her about it but I don't want her to to think I'm saying she should shave because I'm really not!

Not accusing you of anything op (truly) but I do think posters sometimes feel so “safe” on this board that they forget there is a case to be made for extra caution when giving info on these topics.

My dd is younger than the age group you are asking about, but even if she was 14 I don’t think I would volunteer details of her bodily grooming.

It just plays into a lot of issues that can be regarded through a lens of creepiness, even if that would never occur to most of us. And we all know some creeps do lurk on mn.

Anothernamechangeplease · 21/06/2022 18:07

Mine is a bit older but she did remove it at that age. Also a dancer if that's relevant.

GreatCrash · 21/06/2022 18:07

DD14 - yes

hippospot · 21/06/2022 18:14

@WhereAreWeNow you have summed up exactly how I do feel!

My 15 year old shaves under her arms.

She's never bothered shaving her legs, it's only her underarms that she prefers hair free.

We had the conversation a few years ago about perceptions of body hair and how important it was to be comfortable and feel in control, not to be led by fashion or other people's ideas. So her comfort is hair free underarms, but hairy legs etc.
