Facial sunscreen query

Catandcandle · 21/06/2022 10:23

I had IPL for/ broken veins and facial redness last week (good results), and the beautician was very strict about the need to use SPF 50 daily. I have quite dry/ postmenopausal skin, so use a rich moisturiser every day too. Should I be putting the moisturiser or the sunscreen on first?

That chart posted still says 74% protection after 6-8 hours. Which if you started with factor 30 would mean getting to mere factor 24 : same as several thick jumpers. Chart doesn't support putting cream on again after just 2 hours.

I'm sorry it looks like you've misread that - it is quite small. It says fell by 74% in 6-8h so that means the SPF will be 7.8. Not 24.

Furthermore an SPF of 30 means that it would take 30x longer for the skin to redden if applied as directed compared with no sunscreen and laboratory testing conditions are different than real life.
Falling to an SPF of 8 is a significant drop.

Whether you wear sunscreen or not is obviously a personal choice but the number one cause of melanoma is UV radiation and contributes to 85% of melanoma cancers and is the number one cause of skin aging.

So for me I will be wearing SPF 50 every day and reapplying it regularly, although perhaps less than 2 hourly if I am staying in.

Please can the other poster share where the information about the chemicals causing skin damage has come from. Thank you

@Octopuscrazy'

"Because avobenzone is not stabile, it must be paired with other ingredients that act as stabilizers to prevent it from breaking down in the sun. Breakdown products of avobenzone can cause allergic reactions (Nash 2014). Avobenzone can disrupt the endocrine system and has been shown to block the effects of testosterone in cellular studies (Klopcic 2017)."

There's lot of information on all the individual sun filters out there.

hihellohihello · 22/06/2022 10:39

"How to Use Avobenzone
When applying a sunscreen that contains avobenzone, be sure to read all instructions and warnings. While this product is generally safe to use on many areas of the body, you should be cautious and avoid getting the lotion into your eyes or mouth.
Since avobenzone isn’t waterproof, you should reapply the sunscreen if you sweat heavily or go swimming. If you plan on staying in the sun for a long time, you should also reapply after two to three hours. Do not apply creams with avobenzone to broken or irritated skin, as the ingredient can exacerbate the irritation."

hihellohihello · 22/06/2022 10:43

"Avobenzone breaks down in the sun in 30 minutes
As an initial matter, once exposed to the sun, avobenzone alone offers about 30 minutes of protection. Since UVA rays do their damage deep within the layers of your skin, you wouldn’t experience the effects until many years later. Because many chemical sunscreen companies continue to use avobenzone for UVA protection, they have to add other, even more unsafe, chemicals like octocrylene, homosalate, or octisalate to make the avobenzone work longer than 30 minutes."

Sorry, folks for sharing this particular rabbit hole of mine...but this is why I try to get the most robust formulas I can. 😫

One more link. Sorry, loads to trawl through on my history. I got a tension headache earlier on in the week with all this. But my conclusions were Reef Safe, long lasting, cover up and don't stay out for long in the highest UV very often.

I've recently starting using the new Dermalogica Powerbright one, highly recommended, really light and moisturising. I mix with alturist too to make it thicker some days and pad it out as it's expensive!

I've been wondering what do people do about topping up in the day if you are wearing makeup on top? Do you fully wash your face and start again or do you have things you can put (spray?) on top?

I've tried the pixie spray but I am quite shiny and it did do me any favours!

I generally wear Ultrasun and don't top up as it's long lasting. But when I've worn ordinary suncream I would wash my face (apart from eye makeup) and make sure I wear sunglasses and a hat. I only wear a dusting of tinted face powder over sunscreen plus a bit of blusher so that doesn't take too long. I need to be somewhere I can was my face, though.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/06/2022 12:31

Thanks op. I've had laser treatment for my chin hairs and been strictly instructed to wear factor 50. I'm currently only wearing factor 30 as it was all I could find in a moisturiser.

Thank you! I might give the all day stuff ago too.

I’ve recently bought supergoop resetting powder and Kate somerville spf setting spray for reapplication. I don’t plan to use these as my primary spf, just for topping up.

I also wouldn’t rely on these if I was actually out in the sun all day (probably just wouldn’t wear makeup and reapply sunscreen) but for days mainly spent at home/office/shopping etc I think it would be ok.

Hi OP, can I ask how your skin looks after the IPL? I would like to get it done but am customer facing at work. A review of a local salon said you can have redness and minor scabbing for up to 5 days afterwards and that puts me off because I wouldn't want to take holidays around getting it done.

theDudesmummy · 22/06/2022 13:08

@ElderflowerTonic I was told not to do it within three weeks of going on sunshiney holiday. I did it exactly three weeks before I leave. I said I wanted to reduce red cheeks/broken vessels on cheeks and around nose. But the therapist also pointed out to me that I have a number of discoloured brown areas "sunspots". I am also quite freckly, which I have never liked. She went over my face twice, once for the brown areas and once for the red.

The first day there was little change, maybe a bit of generalised redness. The next the brown areas got darker and a few really dark, in fact actually black, little pinpoint spots came up here and there. It would not have been very noticeable under makeup. Now on day 4 and the red cheeks and vessels are about 75% improved and would be completely invisible under makeup. The black spots have sloughed off and the brown areas are fading. My freckles are lighter than they were and my skin just looks generally nicer and smoother. I am due to have another three treatments over the course of the rest of the year.

ElderflowerTonic · 22/06/2022 13:16

Thanks, that very helpful. I think I will leave it until Autumn now but definitely get it done. I have a noticeable area of pigmentation on one of my cheeks that I think is sun damage and it'd be great to get that treated.

hellosunshineagainx · 22/06/2022 15:03

I'd highly recommend Cosrx aloe soothing 50 spf. I have sensitive skin and rosacea and find it moisturising and no reaction. It's a Korean brand who are known for great skin care. I get it from look fantastic but a few places do it.

Previously I have tried body shop and la roche and neither compare to this one

vjg13 · 22/06/2022 23:15

Unless you are using Ultrasun, SPF is the last thing applied in your skincare routine and before make up if you wear it.

If you use Ultrasun, that goes on before skincare and makeup (instructions on bottle)

Remember to reapply through the day as well, you can get spf sprays that go over make up if you wear it every day

EveParker22 · 07/07/2022 16:58

I would say Altruist or Dermalogica. Do you use a primer with SPF? The dermalogica one is amazing.

I also get bad spots and dermalogica helped clear this up so much!!!!!! Altruist is more budget friendly though ....

You also need to apply a LOT of sunscreen to get the advertised protection. I use Ultrasun - the anti pigmentation one if out all day and the Beauty Pie spf50 one otherwise. I have to wait a good 15 mins before it dries down enough to put a bit of make up on.
