Salwar Kameez

Is there any particular significance to a white or cream coloured salwar kameez?

White is worn by mourners in India so white garments are considered inauspicious for weddings etc. brighter colours are preferable for happy events/celebrations.

What about cream? Or with some decoration?

Have you been asked to wear it? Maybe some background/photo or context would help? In Indian culture a widow would wear white, off white pale muted colours after the loss of her husband. She wouldn’t generally wear bright colours or statement jewellery. I don’t know if that’s still the case these days but the older generation (like my mum) tend to adhere to this.

I guess it’s possible that with enough decoration you could elevate a white one out of widow territory but I’m struggling to imagine it.

White or cream is a common colour in Pakistan, perhaps with embroidery especially in the warm summer months

I thought white was a mourning colour, but I wasn't certain.

I recently visited a Mandir and all the women were dressed colourfully, whereas many of the men wore white kameez (kurta?) over dark trousers.

I want a long top over trousers outfit, and it struck me that sulwar kameez might be exactly what I've been looking for.

White is for mourning/funerals in Punjabi culture. I think this is the case for most Indian cultures but someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Cream is also worn at funerals but can also be dressed up for other occasions, though it is generally a colour favoured by old women. My 102 year old grandma's wardrobe was predominately cream.

There’s plenty of places you can buy these long tops these days - was it a top and bottom set you wanted specifically? Otherwise a lot of women just buy the long tops (Kurta) and wear over plain leggings
