How to wash “professional dry clean only” sequin jacket?

I can’t get to a dry cleaners in time to get it done… has been packed away in a closet and now smells really rather musty with a little bit of mould on the cuffs.

Is 100% polyester but covered in sequins.

Soak it in warm water in a bucket with washing powder. Swirl gently and leave, repeat a couple of times, rinse. Dry flat on a towel. Will be fine.

I wouldn't wash it - even with one of the special bags that you can use in a tumble dryer. I think the sequins will come off.

Can you get the mould off by very gently washing the cuffs in woollite? And for the rest of it I'd hang it outside sprayed with febreze

I’ve turned it inside out and sprayed the crap out of it with white vinegar and hung outside- my plan was for the sun to help kill the mould bacteria but we’ve had unforecast rain all afternoon Angry (have kept it out of the rain though)

I’d put it inside a bag for lingerie and wash it on the silk/wool setting set to cold water.

I wash all of my hand wash only clothes on a cold silk wash and then spin afterwards and so far nothing has been ruined.

Don't think I’d spin sequins though,
drying with a towel would be a good idea.

There’s no hand wash setting on my machine but there is delicate, I could put it in a bag with some napisan and cold wash on a slow spin?

I washed my delicate wedding dress in the bath with some washing soap for delicates and it came out well.

Clymene · 18/06/2022 18:40

I really wouldn't put it in the machine. @Yessha's suggestion is good. Bucket, big sink or bath.

To dry it, lay it at one end of a bath sheet, fold the bath sheet over so it's sandwiched between two layers of towel and roll up gently. Then hang to dry. It should dry really quickly even indoors if it's polyester

It shouldn't go into a washing machine, even on a delicate setting.
Use lukewarm water with a small amount of washing powder made for wool (I can't remember the name).
Gently squeeze it through, and rinse in several clean waters.
Then squeeze it between thick towels until a lot of the moisture is gone, then lay it flat somewhere to dry completely.

I would put it in a mesh bag on delicates wash. If it’s got mould on it, it needs a wash in a machine I think. I wash sequin tops on delicate washes.. nothing bad has happened

MotherofPearl · 18/06/2022 20:03

I have a few items of delicate knitwear that came with instructions to wash by hand in cold water with a tiny bit of shampoo added. Perhaps that is worth a try? Drying flat on a towel sounds like a good idea too.

AnImaginaryCat · 18/06/2022 20:08

Spun of the machine could break the sequins, even the low spin of a delicates cycle.

Sprinke with bicarb for a few hours then gentle hand was with liquid soap. Rinse and dry with towels as suggested above.

No !.

I'd spray the inside with this and gently wash the cuffs only in woolite or a gentle shampoo.
