Child wants ears pierced

So my 6 year old has been asking to have her ears pierced as most girls in her class have now had them pierced. It seems to be a knock on effect in her class. I've explained to her that they pinch, sore afterwards etc. I have a few ear piercings myself and the studio I go to have raised their age limit due to parents not being able to sit with their child and comfort them because of covid, they still have all covid measures in place. Majority of other places I've looked at are mostly guns and some just state a certain equipment (cabt remember the name) but doesn't state if that's a gun or needle. I've not told her she can have them yet as I'm still doing research. Anyone had piercings with guns and been ok? How did your child act? Did you use numbing cream on them? Thankyou.

Thankyou. Just watched the video very interesting. I had lobes done when I was really young and cabt remember them at all so not sure how they were done. All others were with needle. I'm still iffing about it just because of her age but she's quite old headed and is adamant she wants them and she'll clean them (I will clean them) I need to decide before the holidays to allow them to heal before going back.
@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor wow you did it yourself!! I love ear piercings I have a fair few but would be terrified to do it myself, I don't think I'd bebable to bring myself to push the needle through 😂
Thankyou you've all really helped me

It didn't hurt and it was the only way I was going to get them done as my mum said no- I was 15 and it was the 80s, I was hardly rebelling 🙄

If I had a girl I would have them done ASAP.

Memaww · 18/06/2022 11:06

I pierced my own ears (x3 each side)
And did DDs (13) a few weeks ago. Lobe piercings are very easy to do.
I also do my friends. Hygiene, proper packaged and sterilised equipment is paramount.

I'm not recommending you do this but I would self pierce with needles (amazon) over Claire any day!

VanillaImpulse · 19/06/2022 08:49

I'm going to go against the grain and say my daughter first had hers done at a piercing studio with a needle. I was a bit snooty about Claire's and heard needles were better. She cried a lot. They got infected, she needed antibiotics.
A year later we tried Claire's. No problems at all.
Now she's older she said the needle was awful as you have the pain of it going in, coming out, the earring put in and then the back put on x2! Claire's was just one shot, all done. You can get two people to do both ears at the same time so over very quickly.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 19/06/2022 08:54

Not for us. The guy with the needle was really quick and it was done instantly.

My DD jumped on having it done with the gun. It was one girl doing the job.

@Minniemoo6
What good experience can this really be? It’s too early. The poster who had to bother A&E should be ashamed. Totally wrong to even think piercing is ok at a young age. At 13 plus it’s different. No one did this where we live and parents would have resisted anyway. It just wasn’t seen as appropriate.

🤣 yep totally ashamed I had to "bother" A&E for potential sepsis.

Minniemoo6 · 19/06/2022 10:53

I've researched and found one that is further afield but he's got hundreds of brilliant reviews with children and said they have a lady that will talk to the child whilst being pierced and make the child comfortable before hand and explain the process to make sure she is adamant before they pierce. I'm more nervous than she is. She said she's absolutly sure. She's seen me clean my ears when I've had piercings and sometimes helps me too. To all of those who pierced your own ears your more brave than me I just couldn't bring my hand to my ear to do it...you must have nerves of steel 😂
Not sure what to do in regards to numbing the ear though as I've heard it can thicken the skin making it harder for the needle to go through

Im sure the lady at the establishment will talk you through the pros and cons of numbing. Dd wasn't offered any cream when she had hers done and it wasn't needed tbh

@uhtredsonofuhtred1
You caused it! Don’t pierce children. It was 100% avoidable. How awful that this happened due to pure vanity.

@TizerorFizz was my mum also negligent for allowing me to get my ears pierced aged 9? The same thing happened to me, butterflies got stuck inside the new piercings and I needed a GA to have them removed. I was extremely unlucky but this could have happened to an adult too. I had them repierced a few years later and had small sleeper hoops and had no further problems.

evilharpy · 20/06/2022 22:33

My daughter had hers done at 7. She was desperate and hassled me about it daily Grin we went to a piercing studio that used needles, I was adamant that no gun was going anywhere near her. She didn't even flinch, the piercer was brilliant but also very very careful about making sure it was my daughter's choice and that she consented. She had no problems at all and they healed perfectly.

Minniemoo6 · 23/06/2022 09:43

Well I've asked her every single day to make sure she's adamant that's what she wants. I've explained it does pinch but it's very brief etc. So I've booked her in with a well rated piercer. Ido have some emla left over from when she had a vaccination do you think it would work on lobes just to dull the sting abit? I'm more nervous than her.

OP posts:
RedCarsGoFaster · 23/06/2022 10:50

No, don't muck about with Emla unless the piercer has said it's OK. So if you want to use it, please ask them first so they can advise you.

It only numbs some of the skin - not the entire earlobe.

The less anxious you are, the better for your daughter. If she's het up and anxious, she'll be more likely to feel the pain more acutely than if she's relaxed, so just help keep her nice and calm and happy.

evilharpy · 23/06/2022 11:16

For a lobe piercing with a needle you really don't need to numb it. It's over in a flash and really doesn't hurt. My daughter makes a huge song and dance about stubbing her toe but said she hardly felt a thing.

Imnotmeanymore3 · 23/06/2022 13:10

Thankyou that's put me more at ease. She gets up every mor ing telling me how many sleeps she has left she's so excited. My main concern is she has one ear pierced thinks it hurt more than she thought and refuse the other....maybe she'll rock one ear though 😂 apparently that'd what I did when I had mine pierced, but then again I was alot younger than my dd is and it was pierced with a gun in a hairdressers as they were back then.

Minniemoo6 · 23/06/2022 13:12

Just realised I've used my other username 🤦‍♀️😂 rumbled...Good thing I'm not trying to hide my identity too much.

bouncydog · 23/06/2022 17:07

DD had hers done at 3 as she wanted them done - got off the chair after the first one, said she was like her dad now and was done! She got the second one done a couple of weeks later when she decided she wanted to be like her childminders older daughter, whom she loved! We didn’t fret about it as didn’t want to make an issue.

SandyWedges · 23/06/2022 17:12

I had mine done with a gun. They were absolutely fine. But I'd want my daughter to go to a proper piercing place personally and in the holidays after primary school

RedWingBoots · 23/06/2022 17:22

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/06/2022 10:05

** I did my second hole myself with an ice cube, a bottle of surgical spirit and a pair of earrings I was fine 🤣 I'd probably go with the needle option.

I did the same with 2 of my piercings when I was a teenager.

The other 4 were done with needles.

First 2 when I was a toddler at a jewelers. The last 2 at a tattoo parlour so I could match up the ones I had done myself as a teenager.

With the last 4 I never did any specific aftercare.
