Skirts - tops that aren’t tucked in

Can a long summer skirt ever look ok without a top tucked in? All the websites only ever show skirts with tucked in tops.

My middle is far too big too be seen with a top tucked in (size 16-18), particularly as my stomach looks huge.

They can but it’s hard to get right and generally easier to do with knitwear rather than other tops. You could try a long a-line sleeveless shirt going for a kind of layered boho look or you could try a boxy fit short but not cropped T shirt (cos do good ones) with a French tuck but that then needs trainers or chunky sandals to balance it.
I hate skirts for this reason and tend to wear dresses.
Do you have a particular skirt in mind?

Littlemissprosecco · 17/06/2022 17:06

Do a French tuck! It will look great

RevoltingHumanHead · 17/06/2022 17:09

What about a tie front blouse, so it's not tucked in but you avoid having the hem just hanging down.

I go for shorter tops, they look shorter on the hanger than on me. I also third French tuck or tuck in and then pull the top out a lot.

NoSquirrels · 17/06/2022 17:09

How is a French tuck not a tuck? I’m not sure it would solve the OP’s issue. But am prepared to be wrong!

OompaLoompaa · 17/06/2022 17:11

A French tuck isn’t really a tuck, it’s just putting a tiny bit of the top in the skirt and is surprisingly flattering.

PresidentByeThen · 17/06/2022 17:14

I am stupidly high waisted so a French tuck allows me to 'lower' my waistline slightly.

Works particularly well with drawstring trousers etc

hihellohihello · 17/06/2022 17:27

Waistcoat style fitted tops don't need tucking in. Peplum blouses are another option.

violetsanddaisies · 17/06/2022 19:25

A more straight shape skirt would work better so that the lower half has less volume, perhaps with a boxy top. Otherwise the whole combination can look a bit shapeless.

whirlyswirly · 17/06/2022 20:21

Ooh I never knew I was a French tucker Grin I have long legs and a short waist so do this all the time.

Today I'm wearing long skirt, white linen tee with a shorter fitted cami vest under. What I do is tuck the bottom of the tee into the vest. It just looks like it's in the skirt but avoids the high waistline issue.

ExtremelyDedicated · 17/06/2022 20:23

Shorter and fitted but not cropped or too tight tops. I’m not a fan of the French tuck, it looks messy on most people.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 17/06/2022 22:06

Cabbages and Roses almost always have untucked tops.

Don't do a "French tuck" it just looks daft.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 17/06/2022 22:09

I appreciate Cabbages and Roses isn't every one's cup of tea but I think this looks great

I buy skirts a size or two larger and wear them on my hips, so below the navel and on the downslope of the stomach. Loose tops look like floaty layers, and fit/flare tops define the waist more gently and more comfortably than a waistband. Would that help?

I don't like anything fastened at the waist though, it feels all wrong to me. It's been a ten-year trouser drought for me, with high waists and skinny legs! Skirts sitting at the waist seem to swivel more too, but not when they sit at my hips.

Afterfire · 18/06/2022 08:17

I’m an 18/20 and I tuck tops in. I have a huge stomach but I think it actually makes my stomach look even bigger leaving tops hanging off of it rather than tucked in. I tend to buy oversized long tops (yours is very good for this, particularly their basic t shirts) and then I can pull a lot of the fabric out to make a really good, puffy overhang which looks better.

I also sometimes go for more boxy / square shaped tops so they hang directly over where a tuck would be and that looks good too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/06/2022 09:04

@RevoltingHumanHead 's suggestion is a good one.

I don't like tucked in tops and a French tuck just looks as if I don't know how to dress myself. I sometimes use a button and hair bobble to make a kind of knotted effect to give an untucked top a but more shape.

RudsyFarmer · 18/06/2022 09:08

Could you make a belt work? I sometimes add a brown belt that sits on my hips on a untucked top and it looks nice and casual.

N0tfinished · 18/06/2022 09:18

I just bought this blouse in M&S and I think it works well. It stops at the waist but the tie swoops over & is forgiving. Sizing is quite generous. I agree with the PP though, long tops can be more unflattering of it doesn't suit your proportions. I also like to tuck in & pouf/blouse my tops to fudge things a bit. Try a few & see if it works for you.

artisanbread · 18/06/2022 09:21

There are quite a few tops with shirred waists at the moment which might work?

farmerboy · 18/06/2022 09:48

I've got the same problem. Last year I bought some loose fit short t shirts from M&S and they were perfect. Had to wear a minimiser bra with them otherwise I looked like a ship in full sail. Tried to get some more this year but can't find the short length anymore.
Also agree with a previous op about tied tops. I've bought a couple from white stuff and they are great.
