Why did nobody tell me this?! (“Mum tum”)

DiscoBadgers · 17/06/2022 12:36

Thanks to my 10lb at birth DS, I’ve been left with that sad mum tum flab apron. I always thought jumpsuits were a total no for me, until someone I mentioned it to at work told me she just buys maternity ones. Thought I’d give it a shot and IT WORKS! I was worried it would hang weirdly but they just skim the lumpy bits like magic - game changer!!

Thanks for the tip OP! Full disclosure I don't have kids, but I've got a real tummy on me... yet a hankering for a jumpsuit. Possibly still won't suit me but definitely worth a try I know I will look like Humpty Dumpty

LynneBenfield · 17/06/2022 13:12

Ah, jumpsuits go wrong at the back for me (flat of arse). I’m glad you’ve found a solution to your jumpsuit woe though!

Same problem here.

A friend gave me a navy linen dress-style jumpsuit that she didn't want. It was gorgeous but no good for me due to flat arse and weird proportions I think

AndSoFinally · 17/06/2022 15:38

Yes, I've got a couple of ruched side jersey tops left from my maternity wardrobe and these do exactly the same now I'm not pregnant. They're really flattering! 😂

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/06/2022 15:52

I can't wear jumpsuits sadly as I have a really flabby and cellulite ridden arse which just shows through, but I might find some maternity tops and see if they work on the mum tum!

surreymum89 · 17/06/2022 15:57

@LynneBenfield @NormalForNuneaton coming off topic but out of curiosity what do you wear ?

I also have no bum(but wide hips) and find a lot of clothes ,jumpsuits, mom jeans, high waisted shorts, lots of styles of skirts and any close fitting dresses just look bad on me , pretty much 90% of the trends these days and I'm at a loss of what to wear.

My flat arse came with narrow/average hips, so what I wear may not be helpful.

Shorts - I do wear them but prefer short types (4in leg). I prefer either a tailored chino style (an MN cliche but the Boden ones work for my shape) or loose fit, boyfriend style if denim.

Dresses - Tend to avoid as they either look matronly or slutty (boobs), but if I do I go for a tailored but not tight (!) shirt dress style, around 3in above the knee.

Skirts - I avoid because I never know what to wear with them. I find them difficult to match with tops and shoes.

Jeans - I prefer straight leg, mid rise styles.

I don’t like bodycon stuff. I don’t hate my body but I don’t want to feel like I’ve always got to be breathing in or adjusting myself. I prefer my clothes to skim and feel comfortable.

Irishfarmer · 17/06/2022 16:37

Where did you buy it? I'm currently pregnant and no where seems to stock maternity clothes!! I have bought stuff but all online, I'd like to try on clothes

KalaniM · 18/06/2022 08:18

“Left with sad mum tum”… I really sympathise with the adjustment needed when our bodies change. And can we think of a way to rephrase these changes which is more constructive!

“ my new successful baby maker tummy” or something?!idk…

kimfox · 18/06/2022 08:23

Jumpsuits make me angry! I really want to wear one but in addition to the awful mum tum issues I always find they are too short in the body and are literally slicing me in half length ways. I'm not even massively tall (5'9). I've given up now.

MigsandTiggs · 18/06/2022 08:38

@LynneBenfield I too, have a flat bum. You can try padded nickers, but that might be too much with wide hips.
I’m a size 12 and wear jeans with stretch so bum/thigh area doesn’t sag and a longer top. Love midi dresses, esp the ones that come in just under the bust (empire line) and fall over the bum to disguise its shape. Shirt dresses also work, but I tie any belt at the back only (as you would do with a mac) as that gathers fabric to make bum look bigger. (I have a flat tum). Skirts work if they are tight across the hips, with pleats or gathers starting at bum not waist level.
Knee length cardigan in a smaller size but left unbuttoned can also hide the bum. Hth.

I still wear my H&M maternity t-shirts. They're actually my favourite and I was thinking of getting more! I also have a great black jersey dress that comes in handy too that I still wear. I feel so much less self conscious in them but always wondered if anyone could tell!

anybloodyname · 18/06/2022 08:42

I wish I was flat of arse 😫

RhubarbFairy · 18/06/2022 09:03

Love this! I still have a handful of maternity tops that I love.

I don't have any jumpsuits but j have recently developed a love for Lucy and Yak dungarees. I find them very flattering as they skim my stomach, and they're so comfortable. No more waistbands.

I went for some cotton ones as I'm not a fan of corduroy, but I saw the pink cords in person recently and they're not as 'cord like' as I thought they would be, so I'm tempted with them.

Rina66 · 18/06/2022 09:15

This is quite a good style jumpsuit to hide a tummy...

TheMoth · 18/06/2022 09:21

I know this is about jumpsuits, but how old is your dc? I had an apron after my second, even though in photos, I was actually really slim after all the walking I did. The apron went after about a year. But the hip fat never really left.

Fashiontatts · 18/06/2022 09:35

I am SO GLAD you shared this...! I am 100% going to try. 2 big babies and 2 c sections, within 2 years have left me with the dreaded apron (was a size 8/10 prior, so tummy took a beating with enormous bumps)
Whilst my weight is back to (almost) pre baby, I struggle to disguise my stomach. Don't know why I never considered maternity tops etc before!

That's good to read, I'll not lose hope yet then!
