Lemon juice to lighten hair in the sun

Has anyone tried using lemon juice in the sun to lighten hair? I've got mousy light brown natural hair and wondering if a bit of lemon juice on selected strands would work to create a natural beachy blonder look. It's hot today so I could sit in the sun for a while. Is this a terrible idea?!

I spent much of the 80s doing just that (in addition to some ill-advised experiments with Sun in). I can't say it made any discernible difference, but it won't hurt if you wanted to try.

Ditto. Also crushed up Rhubarb roots although that was more messy.

John Freida does a spray www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Colourants/Hair-Lightener/John-Frieda-Go-Blonder-Lightening-Spray-100ml/p/697700 which is grown up Sun-In. You don't even need the sun for that.

This can damage the hair cuticle a bit so don't spent tooo long doing it.

If you want a head full of bees wasps and flies, go for it 😂

Made my brown hair orange when I did it in the 1990s and not the sunny blond highlights I was after. Don’t do it!

I tried this as a teen after reading about it in Just17 magazine, nothing happened. They also advised to bathe in tea for a ‘sun kissed glow’. That was a load of shite too. That magazine cost me an awful lot of wasted time.

I’m sure putting acidic lemon juice on your hair can’t be good for it.

Pastaa · 17/06/2022 11:02

I tried it when I was a teenager and it lightened my hair by 2 shades however it's very drying so apply a moisturizing mask later

RevoltingHumanHead · 17/06/2022 11:03

It will make your hair all frazzly.

Camomile tea is another thing people use. Probably won't be as drying as lemon.

Yodaisawally · 17/06/2022 11:05

Do they still make sun in? You'll just end up with a tinge of ginger. You won't go blonde.

PinkFrenchFancy · 17/06/2022 12:00

Thank you, thoughts of orange frazzled hair with wasps buzzing around me have successfully put me off!

One friend did it on holiday years ago - we couldn't stop laughing at the result 😂😂😂

Takes me back to Jackie magazine in the 70s and lemon pips in the plughole! Chamomile tea can have a gentler lightening effect.

The John Frieda spray is fantastic. When your hair is wet after washing, spray some onto the roots, then comb it through. It creates pretty subtle, natural highlights this way. Don't overdo it though. Too much or too often and you hair will go yellow and brassy, But combed through the roots once a month it looks sunkissed.
