Oh wise ones...I'm due to go to a concert in a London park soon.
The weather is likely to be warm. It'll be a very mixed crowd, so whilst I'm not trying to keep up with the trendy youngsters, I really don't want to feel like a middle-aged frump. I'm mid 40's, size 16, 5'5", and very pear shaped...I have a large bum and thighs and small boobs. I live in jeans and either T-shirts or relaxed blouses. I absolutely detest how shorts make me feel. And I don't know if I can confidently pull off a dress/skirt and trainers. Where do I even begin?!?

I would wear your jeans so you are comfortable and maybe treat yourself to a new top, something like this which has a bit of a summer festival vibe - it can get colder at night so I wouldn’t wear a dress unless it’s an especially posh concert.

I agree, I'd wear jeans and a top to a concert in a park.

I've just bought these from M&S, they're lovely to wear and look good with a blouse or loose sleeveless top tucked in.

Absolutely no to jeans in a summertime park concert in London, you will absolutely roast

i think maxi dresses and trainers look good on everyone, plus so comfy. Id order a load and see if you like anything

MrszClaus · 15/06/2022 20:38

I'd wear a midi or maxi dress in a wrap style with the classic white trainer. It's my summer go to!! Not too hot, can add a cute denim jacket too if it's going to be into the evening

Yeah - I was gonna say, keep an eye on the weather but jeans would be too warm and uncomfortable for me! If you’re more comfortable in trousers you could get some patterned/wide leg/summery trousers and wear with a top. Or a maxi/midi skirt/dress.

Rina66 · 16/06/2022 09:07

What about wide leg crop trousers or a wide leg jump suit? I was in New Look as was very impressed with the trousers, flat front, elasticated waist back and pockets!

Aw thanks everybody! I guess I just have to get to the shops and actually try things on and see what works!!
it’s funny whenever I wear patterned trousers I feel like I’m wearing pjs…too many years of wearing black suits in the corporate world!!

Frock & leggings with trainers. Frock as smart as you want or floaty & casual. Jumpsuit a no no unless you have a very strong pelvic floor!

Bugbabe1970 · 27/06/2022 19:15

Dress leggings DMs

ShaunaTheSheep · 27/06/2022 19:23

Is it day or evening?
Seated or sitting on the ground?

My go to is a maxi dress, and a pair of leggings to pull on underneath if it gets cold in the evening, plus a lightweight merino or cashmere cropped cardigan.

MercyChant66 · 27/06/2022 19:38

I was at a concert in a London park last night and although it was a warm day, I was very comfortable in jeans, T shirt and thin jumper for later.

Herejustforthisone · 27/06/2022 20:17

Why do you refer to yourself as a ‘frumpy mummy’? Why not just a woman?

A super cool midi/maxi dress with some Vejas or Vans Old Skools, a spray tan plus some big, big sunnies and you’ll feel and look cool AF.

Why is she not allowed to use the words she wants to?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 27/06/2022 20:42

No to a jumpsuit if there’ll be portaloos. I’d want something quick to get in/out of.

I love the look of that hush top.

Portonic · 28/06/2022 06:28

If OP just described herself as "a woman", we'd have no idea of her issue or how to help her! She is telling us she doesn't want to feel/look frumpy or mumsy

Valleymum2 · 28/06/2022 10:38

I have exactly the same body shape and I feel your pain re pear shaped. This is what I find works for me. It’s also worth watching Trinny Facebook videos as she - whilst generally very skinny all over which I am not - - is a bit pear shaped and many of her outfits are designed to flatter the pear shape.

  • platform trainers - elongate your legs and balance everything out a bit . They are my absolute go to just now.
  • maxi dress or skirt is super flattering and really comfortable too. You could wear leggings underneath it if it’s a bit chilly . Got for something that has no pleats, no gathered st the waist, and if you look at trinnys video on belts you’ll get some good tips on wearing a belt with it
  • id go for something like silver trainers and belt with a long dress also a nice cross body bag. Big earrings to balance out body too. And loads of bangles
  • Go for something with a bit of sparkle if you can or some leopard
  • also a wee denim jacket over the top. I used to wear long jackets to cover my bum but have discovered that shorter jackets sometimes more flattering. I bought one with puffed sleeves from mint velvet last year and the puff sleeves really balance out the smaller upper body
  • sparkly or neon hair clip if you can .
have an amazing time
