Tell me about collagen?

Up to now I generally haven't worried about aging. I've stayed fit and healthy and considered that "youthful".

However I'm now 52 and starting to look old. Not just older, but old - tired and it definitely affects how others are around me.

I keep seeing adverts saying collagen is the answer. I'm not going to do anything that takes a lot of time, I don't care enough to keep it up, but I have a birthday coming up and was thinking of treating myself.

Has anyone tried it? What were the results like and what do I need to know to choose the right thing?

If you say you don't have a lot of time, and are looking for a quick fix, then maybe a treatment like botox or fillers or something might be good for you (obviously they're not everyone's cup of tea), but to be honest there is no quick fix with skincare or supplements.

The thing with collagen is that just putting it on in a cream form means it will likely just sit on top of your skin and feel nice, but not do much. You can take collagen supplements, I have read mixed results. In theory yes they can help supplement your body's collagen stores, but it won't necessarily be directed at the skin on your face. It will probably improve things overall for body, like your tendons, ligaments and yes, your skin. However it may not make a significant difference to your face, which is where you are wanting it.

Actually you would be better off using something that makes your skin produce more collagen itself. Something like Tretinoin, or an over the counter retinol will help over time. But it doesn't happen overnight.

You can get it by prescription at a dermatologists, or you can sign up to Skin&me or Dermatica to get a subscription sent to you monthly.

Basically, what Tretinoin does is:
increases cellular turnover (which diminishes as we age)
increases collagen production in our skin (which diminishes as we age)
And over time, it thickens the underneath layer of skin (the dermis) which produces a slight plumping effect.
It's not a miracle cream, and it won't make you look 25, but it will improve fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone and give an overall fresher and 'younger' appearance.

Also do you use SPF? You need to be wearing it everyday to help prevent further sun damage.

There are some skincare threads on here if you are interested. Or on youtube there are some bloggers who talk about skincare routines.

HotandFlashy is very good - she started using active skincare at 50 years old and has seen some good results but it has taken a few years.
Also Nadine Baggott has been recommended on here.

For anyone who wants something that may help with collagen, I would recommend Garden of Wisdom's Neurophroline.

I have pasted below the description of the item:

Neurophrolineâ„¢ is an extract derived from wild indigo, Tephrosia purpurea. This patented extract helps break down cortisol production by skin cells, activating the release of a natural calming neuropeptide to sooth your mood and visibly improve your skin tone.

Suitable for all skin types, Neurophrolineâ„¢ Serum defends the skin against collagen damage while reducing inflammation, dryness, breakouts, fine lines and wrinkles. It works by breaking down the bodies of cortisol production (the stress hormone) which has been connected to a wide range of skin issues and premature ageing.

By limiting cortisol, which is linked to collagen breakdown, Neurophroline™ Serum tackles lines, wrinkles and sagging, giving your firmer, more luminous, youthful-looking skin. Cortisol also affects the production of Hyaluronic Acid. By reducing cortisol, this advanced serum restores hydration levels and combats dry, dehydrated skin. As cortisol has inflammatory effects and can result in the production of excess sebum, Neurophroline™ Serum is also an excellent way to treat and prevent acne – and help soothe rosacea.

Also no I don't work for G.O.W, it's just something I have come across! It helps by tackling the inside rather than just sitting on the skin like a lot of collagen creams may do.

Yes, it's the wider benefits of supplements for ligaments etc that interest me most. I'm never going to be the person who cares enough about my appearance to engage with a complex routine, but if it helps me feel younger in my active life and has a bonus of better skin/nails etc...

I buy collagen via amazon. 3 tablets a day no idea if it's helping my wrinkles but when I take it my nails are stronger so my body is definitely absorbing it and using it. Hopefully it will keep my body healthier and stop my skin ageing as quickly.
I've just ordered bone broth for the first time to try.
