Clarins Alpine Herbs Replacement

First time posting and I'm not too sure if I'm posting in the right place but here goes!
I've used Clarins Alpine Herbs cleansing milk for years but towards the end of 2020, they discontinued it and the replacement is just AWFUL!
It doesn't leave my face feeling cleansed, it also caused irritation and to top it off it smells horrible too. I've been trying a few other cleansers from Cerave, La Roche Posay and even Kate Somerville, while they work fine, they just don't leave my skin feeling as good as it did when I was using Alpine Herbs.
I was wondering if anyone else is/was in the same boat and managed to find a great replacement which hopefully doesn't break the bank too much
TIA!

Sorry cannot help with a replacement but agree its horrible now.

The smell reminds me of mothballs, I used the foaming cleanser the one in the orange tube which is now discontinued for years, now its changed to this Alpine Herbs, lucky I managed to get a sample before I purchased the new one, horrible horrible horrible.

The woman on the counter was very reluctant to give me a sample and really was pushing the new and 'improved' version, saying it just the same, er its nothing like it, and it does not foam up either and very difficult to rinse off.

ReallyNeedingSleep · 13/06/2022 12:56

Oh I used to like the orange tube for travelling!
Why have they got to keep "improving" stuff when they were already selling a popular, well loved product anyway??
I found the Alpine Herbs "improved" version didn't "soak in" iyswim and didn't emulsify properly when I was rinsing it off, just....WHYYYYY??

That's a shame. I remember Alpine Herbs when it was still in the big glass bottle. Such a nice fragrance & very gentle.

It really was gorgeous wasn't it?
I was in Boots when I was heading home and asked at the assistant at the Clarins counter what she'd suggest, she recommended the Totally Clean cleansing oil, but didn't have a sample so told me to pop back in the week for one.

The Clarins Soothing Gentle Foaming Cleanser in the pink tube is lovely! One of my favourite products, it leaves skin feeling clean and so soft. This one hasn't got that horrible smell, but the pink bottle of toner does have a horrible smell to it! Their micellar water also has horrible smell too.

Hairybaker · 13/06/2022 19:31

L’Oréal fine flowers!! I had the same question. While back. Loved alpine herbs. It’s not quite the same but a lot cheaper so worth trying!

Hairybaker · 13/06/2022 19:31

Often half price in either boots or Superdrug too so check both

Hairybaker · 13/06/2022 19:32

Ps it was the cream cleanser I liked so am not sure if they do a foam one

PinkCosYouAreSoVery · 13/06/2022 19:35

Oh and I should have said, I also have the Total Cleansing Oil and whilst it smells alright, it doesn't give a good clean feeling, its a bit 'meh'. I wouldn't buy it again, but I repeat buy the pink soothing cleanser tube.

ReallyNeedingSleep · 13/06/2022 19:37

@Hairybaker Fab! thanks I'll have a look for that one, especially if its more affordable than Clarins, always helps :)

@PinkCosYouAreSoVery Does it contain SLS? I can't use anything that foams and contains SLS on my face because it gives me perioral dermatitus :(

ooo im not sure, but I do know that that the Total Cleansing Oil is a foaming one too.

”Improving” is just an excuse. It’s really because they want to cut costs by using inferior ingredients and they think they will get away with it. They are only “improving” their profit margins.

ReallyNeedingSleep · 13/06/2022 19:57

@PinkCosYouAreSoVery
Hmm, I did have a feeling the oil would be like that, I've never had much luck with oil cleansers, I may give it a miss then

Sorry, posted too soon, I meant to say that if its a bit foamy maybe it'll be a little too drying for me as well...hmmm
I will definately try the L'Oreal suggestion upthread though, especially worth a try for the price

I loved the yellow tube Clarins cleanser with all my heart. Just a lovely hot cloth cleanser. Couldn't get it and they recommended the pink tube one. Bleargh. It smells pink instead of fresh and herby and the ingredient that makes it "creamy" just goes lumpy and clogs the outside of the tube. I read that this lumpy cloggy stuff is a cheap product they use to pad out the nice bits.
They used to do a big dippy pot cream cleanser that was lovely too. Also discontinued.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 14/06/2022 03:55

Have you tried Neal's Yard Calendula cleanser?

Klorane also do skincare, might be worth a look?

ReallyNeedingSleep · 14/06/2022 13:29

Never thought to try Neal's Yard in all honesty, @LadyOfTheCanyon despite the fact I walk past one on a semi regular basis! I may pop in next time I pass. Not heard of Klorane though, where can I get that from?

Klorane tend to be in posher individual chemists ( the sort that stock Dr Hauschka etc)

Which reminds me - Dr Hauschka Soothing cleansing milk is great for sensitive skin.

I'll keep an eye out for both :)

Some amazing suggestions, thanks everyone, I'll look out for them 😄

Ok I’m replying to woman who had same problems with new Clarins milky cleanser with Alpine herbs. I had same reaction to the new version- it melted my makeup. I tried so many other cleansers like you . The old Clarins milky cleanser with Alpine herbs was perfect used it for years.. After researching the old ingredients I FOUND a good replacement and bought it on Amazon. Ursa Major making moves milky cleanser. I’ve had my makeup with Clarins moisturizer and Vanicream sunscreen under my Lancôme Absolue foundation and cream blush but so far excellent results. Not too drying and not to greasy.
Let me know what you think.

@Pammmm
Oooh, I'll have a look for that when my (so far excellent) replacements I've been using run out. I've been using Cerave hydrating cleanser and Origins Checks & Balances and so far they've been doing a surprisingly good job for me, but I'm always up for trying others :)
