John Frieda Defy Grey disaster

So, I used the John Frieda Defy Grey shampoo and hair mousse twice in a misguided attempt to see what my hair would look like without so much grey hair ( my hair is pretty much white all around my face now as I have been growing it out for a few years).

All I can say is that it has been an unmitigated disaster. The hair that was white has all gone really bright yellow. I have washed it what feels like a thousand times in Head and Shoulders but nothing has happened apart from the yellow looks like it gets brighter to me.

I have tried calling John Frieda who have sworn up and down it doesn't dye the hair and will wash out eventually and they have also sent me out some Violet Crush shampoo to try and tone the yellow down and that has done nothing either.

I have tried the vitamin C method, baking soda method and also using vinegar to try and step the hair but still it just sits there taunting me. Can anyone please come up with any ideas (other than shaving it all off) that I can use to try and get this stuff out of my hair please?

Sorry to hear that op, what a nightmare. I think I would try washing up liquid in your position.

Just use a box dye on it. Or if you can afford, just go to a hairdresser and get them to sort it for you.

I have tried washing up liquid both on its own and mixed with the baking soda, Head and Shoulders and still no movement.

I'm afraid the dye isn't a possibility either as I have a whole host of allergies so that route is out. That's why I have been growing the grey out for the last few years. Unfortunately I had a moment of insanity with this Defy Grey stuff and now I'm paying the price.

Thank you both for the advice though 😊

How about leaving the violet crush to sit on you hair for 30 minutes?

nothingpunny · 12/06/2022 18:11

I haven't tried leaving it that long so I could try that and see if it would help. I have also bought some Fanola No More Yellow to try and that is being delivered tomorrow.

What about henna? Organic dye?

nothingpunny · 12/06/2022 18:19

To be honest, I really like my original white colour. I only tried the Defy Grey to see how it would look as I foolishly believed what it said on the bottle about washing out and not actually putting any dye in the hair. Thank you for the suggestion though😊

Leave the purple on for ages. My hair was quite yellow and brassy and the purple toners did nothing, until I left it on for a few hours. All yellow gone!

nothingpunny · 12/06/2022 18:57

Thank you @Anytimeiseeit! Is there a particular brand you would recommend? That gives me some hope that this can be toned down at least.

This may be a stupid question but will using toner slow down the process of washing the dye/not-suppoosed-to-be-dye out so you think?

Fanola No More Yellow is excellent but be warned to wear gloves as it can dye your hands! It will turn your hair an ashy shade

I use touch of silver purple shampoo as a toner, put it on dry hair and leave. Keep checking though as it will go purple eventually.
I wouldn’t worry about it stopping the yellow washing out, it’s not washing out for you so you need to tone it down instead

BleachLondon do some great concentrated toner shampoos. I use the violet one, mixed with regular shampoo, and once a month leave it on for 10 minutes.
Its sold in Boots.

Thank you everyone for all your advice 😊 I will definitely try the toners and leave for longer in the hope of toning it down.

Luckily it is mainly the fringe that is really yellow so hopefully shouldn't take too long to grow back out. It is just the stubborn streaks around my ears that are really bad but hopefully the toner will calm that down.
