Linen trousers. Is it just me?

Maybe I am just buying cheap linen, in the hope that at the end of the season they will be too big for me😂but I have put on a pair of trousers today, and within 2 hrs they have gone baggy at the knee, despite me pulling them up, 1950's man style, before I sat down! They are not too small, before anyone asks, but possible not the widest leg trouser, probably a couple more inches each side than my actual knees. I have this with jeans too sometimes, but not as often. Apart from throwing more money at the issue, what am I missing in terms of fabric mix etc that the wise women of S & B know? TIA.

Watching with interest, I can’t get on with linen trousers, wash them and can’t ever manage to get them looking nice after, always end up out of shape. Thinking of trying linen blend in future?

UndertheEagle · 12/06/2022 12:59

Linen stretches when you wear it. It should shrink back when you wash them.

dudsville · 12/06/2022 13:08

I do not like linen. Such a messy fabric m, you need to wear the item several days before it hangs nicely, by which time, if its summer you've sweated, or spilled something.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 12/06/2022 13:08

That's worth considering @wonderstuff . I've checked the label, having changed them, and they are actually 55% linen, 45% viscose.Probably some mixes are better than others? I imagine, if I think about it, that thread count makes a difference, like with really good sheets. I think there's probably a way of assessing by eye if the fabric is too open a weave to stand up to knees etc, but I probably need to put my specs on more often to look properly.

Either buy linen blend, which also makes them less crinkly, get massively oversized trousers or pay for really expensive weaves.

Linen blend is prob the easiest route.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 12/06/2022 13:11

@UndertheEagle would yours do better than mine though? I think a couple of hours is a new low, even for me! @dudsville I think you still win, if you are getting a few wears out of them!

Ive got pure linen items and they still look a dreadful mess, creased, baggy, saggy (and Im already creased, baggy and saggy as a person so I dont need any help there)

Shame as the items themselves are lovely

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 12/06/2022 13:14

@AnnaMagnani I don't think oversized would work well on my bum, but blends sounds like a plan. Do you have you any suggestions where to get good linen blends? Or anyone who is more linen organised than I?

@bellac11 I don't need any additional things to make me look like a bag lady, I feel your pain! Grin

Jess Cartner-Morley tackled the linen problem in the Guardian yesterday. There are some useful tips in the comments.

Interesting @notwavingbutdrowning5 thanks.

I don't mind the creasing, it's the drooping around the arse that gets to me. I've got some that don't but we're talking Joseph, Margaret Howell and Toast and they're a much tighter weave than most high street linen. Worth looking out for if you buy second hand.

As regards blends, I think viscose tends to sag too so that might not work any better. I've found linen and cotton to work best. Or linen and wool but that's often dry clean only.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 13/06/2022 11:10

Thanks @Floisme that's really good to know.

This is exactly why l will not wear linen.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 14/06/2022 11:43

Ha @StarlightLady, That sounds sensible. I've just been looking at lycel fabric? Is that the devil's work? Or would it be ok for summer, does anyone know?
