What to wear to a zoom interview?

What's the etiquette for a zoom interview from home?

I mean, I can wear pyjama bottoms, obviously! Grin But for the visible bits...

Am I right in thinking it's a bit less formal than an office based interview? I'd feel like a bit of a plonker wearing a suit jacket in my own home, do you know what I mean?

Will a nice top do?

WWYW?

Best bet is to wear what you would to a face to face interview.

I also wouldn't risk pyjama bottoms incase you randomly need to get up for amy reason.

frasersmummy · 09/06/2022 21:33

I would wear the same as I would for a face to face interview and not pj bottoms . I think if you are dressed appropriately you will automatically become more professional and answer questions better as it will feel right

tealandteal · 09/06/2022 21:43

I have interviewed others and been interviewed over the last year and everyone has tended to go formal. Just wear what you would usually wear to an interview.

BundtCake · 09/06/2022 21:45

You treat it the same as a normal in person interview

GroggyLegs · 09/06/2022 21:47

Nice shirt/blouse.
Neat hair, eyebrows.
I wear slightly heavier makeup (usually very minimal) because it looks better on camera & I feel more confident.

Don't have sports bras drying behind you.

I feel I have become quite adept at zoom these last few years 😂

I had an j terrier on teams last week and debated the same question. In the end I wore what I’d wear to a face to face interview, did my hair and make up, brushed my teeth and wore shoes. The teeth and shoes were because I felt more confident and interview ready.

I wore a suit for several online interviews. In one of them I had stand up and step back. Felt a bit odd to be so dressed up but I'm glad I did. It also made me try my best advice I felt in the zone

You don't need to wear a jacket. A nice blouse will suffice.

Nutellaspoon · 09/06/2022 21:52

No patterns, plain colours work better in my experience. A contrasting colour is better (no beige or cream tops of you're white)

Better to think about your camera set up. Sit facing a window, camera slightly higher - if you're on a laptop stack it on a pile of books, background clean and not busy.

Nutellaspoon · 09/06/2022 21:53

If you wear glasses then remember they can reflect your screen so make sure your tabs are closed

Greatoutdoors · 09/06/2022 21:54

I wore a very light jacket for mine - it’s closer to a blouse really, but jacket shaped if that makes sense. So I gave the appearance of having a jacket on without being too wrapped up for indoors.

Agree with a pp about make up. Wear a decent lipstick is my advice or you look really washed out.

emaline83 · 09/06/2022 21:58

I've done several and always wear same top half as I would in person. Nice top and suit jacket. And like a pp said slightly heavier makeup than in person as looks better on zoom. Always do a dummy zoom call beforehand to check the light and background. It's worth pulling lamps in front of you as needed to make you look better on camera.

Jackanackanory · 09/06/2022 22:02

I had an interview via Zoom recently and wore a lightly patterned top in muted colours with a black jacket. I did wear black trousers too although they weren’t on show. I still wore slippers though!

I found I was a lot more relaxed in a zoom interview than I would have been face to face. Hopefully being in your own home will make it feel less pressured for you.

Good luck for your interview!

Lots of great tips, thanks everyone!

I'll do a test, that's great advice also, thanks.

I think I'm going to wear a blouse. If I was interviewing in person I'd wear a suit, but a nice blouse should be fine, shouldn't it? It's summer after all.

Definitely no work shoes. I've been working at home for so long I don't think I actually own work shoes anymore!

I was only half joking about the PJs! If I did wear them, sods law would dictate I'd need to stand up for some random reason, wouldn't it Hmm

The seat with the best light has me sitting in front of a plain wall with radiator on. Is that a poor set up or is it OK? The light coming in is nice there!

I hadn't thought of the background. Just my sad old face!

If you'd wear a jacket in person, wear one for Zoom. It's not exactly hard to do, is it?

The best advice for Zoom interviews is make sure you're looking at the camera rather than the screen. It makes a difference.

Jackanackanory · 09/06/2022 22:35

My interviewer sent me an email with tips on interview techniques before the meeting - some were a bit patronising (such as ‘don’t forget to smile’) but they did suggest a clean, neutral background, so I would think a plain wall is fine. The important thing is you - if a plain wall gives you better lighting, go for it!

ApolloandDaphne · 09/06/2022 22:44

Not stripes. They play havoc with cameras.

This, 100%.

For the most part, treat it exactly the same as a F2F interview.
In addition, check the background of where you'll be sat: tidy up if necessary or blur the background
