Only mixing part of a home dye kit

I have a few greys around my temples and my hairdresser has been mixing a teaspoon of semi permanent to cover them.

She charges £20 for this which is fair enough as obviously I’m in a chair for the developing time but in terms of the dye used it’s expensive.

I could easily do it at home myself but it feels a waste to mix a whole pack of dye and developer. Has anyone had any luck mixing a small quantity from a home kit? Can’t work out if it’s daft even to try.

Why have I never thought of doing this!?
My roots need doing every 2 weeks!

if I just do my parting will the colour look odd compared to rest of hair?As pp mentioned I usually do whole of roots and then the ends towards the end of the time

Not at all, it’s called a shadow colour. Through your parting and round the front hairline. I often pop in to the hairdressers for the same thing to tide me over between appointments

I just buy the root dye kit. Superdrug does one, or Clairol, and they are usually on offer. I only ever dye my hair like this.

Thank you…..do you know how often I should colour my whole hair?
I will need to shadow colour every 2-3 weeks.

I have scales that do ml as well as g. I look at the weight/volume of the dye and developer and then weigh out 1/2 or 1/3 of each and mix in a porcelain bowl.

not all dyes are 50/50 so as long as you make sure you have 1/2 of each element you’ll be fine.

i have really thinning hair and can stretch half a pack for full head coverage, and use 1/3 for roots only.

Although, my mind just blown realising that the runny stuff is developer and the river is the vomit so now feel a bit braver at trying to use the stuff my hairdresser does.

river is the vomit = thicker is the colour, no idea what happened there!!

I've done the for 30 years!

I use a plastic spoon measure set repurposed from the kitchen, and a dye mix bowl from the chemist.

It's easy to measure the quantity needed. Take the tops off though, don't snap them off. Then you can reseal it.

I've not ever had an issue with dye going off or not working. The chemicals seem pretty stable.

Another one that does this all the time, my hairdresser actually told me that I could! I didn't realise. She noticed that my colour was "building up" on the mid-length and ends, and said I'd be better off only doing my roots. I said about waste and that's when she told me to just use a bit. I suppose it's exactly what hairdressers do though isn't it?!
Top idea to save a bottle from previous dye kit, I'll do that! Also use digital scales for accuracy.

I do this & just use about 2 tablespoons of each liquid. Make sure you unscrew the developer bottle and not snap off the end or it does not keep. I have a brush & mixer bowl from Amazon. A box lasts me about 6 months…
