Cardigans

Please help. For full transparency I favour the dreaded 'dress over tights/leggings with a pair of DMs' look so I am definitely not looking for anything avant-garde here. I'm looking for long-line cardigans that provide some warmth but don't make me look like a matron. I have bought at least 7 and sent them all back. Any ideas gratefully received!

How long are you looking for? Hip length or longer?

I think Sezane, &Other Stories are good for cardigans but a lot of them will be waist length. Depending on what style of dress you’re wearing waist length might work?

If you have a healthy budget I’d recommend &Daughter or Genevieve Sweeney for knitwear too!

resuwen · 06/06/2022 12:51

Hip length ideally. I'm pear shaped so anything waist length makes me look dumpy. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check these out.

Oh really?

I’m pear shaped too and a waist length cardigan or jumper looks good on me - I have a small waist so it draws attention to it. Plus a boxy or oversized shape on top with a waist length balances out my top and bottom

Hip length skims over my waist to the widest point of my hips and looks less flattering.

In any case places like Jigsaw Baukjen Monki all have longer length cardigans. I’d just google hip length cardigans as 100s of results come up, or use a site like John Lewis or ASOS and filter for length plus size, colour etc.

dudsville · 06/06/2022 17:09

I think hip length is shorter than longline, which to me come to my knees or calves.

What kind of style are you interested in?

historyofthefuture · 06/06/2022 19:31

COS cardigans are quite lovely, and lots in hiplength: www.cos.com/en_gbp/women/knitwear/cardigans.html

Thanks, some really good links here! I like these:

Not entirely sure I can pull them off, they look fabulous on the tall, slender, edgy look models but may not have the same effect on a slightly overweight 40-something mum. But it's worth a try!

Another pear here who favours a slightly cropped cardigan. Something that hits at my hip bones cuts me at my widest point. It might be worth trying a few shorter styles, OP, for a pleasant surprise.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/06/2022 22:03

I quite like the simple, fine knit Kettlewell ones.

sleepygal · 06/06/2022 22:05

I love a long line cardi, following with interest

Oddbutnotodd · 06/06/2022 22:08

I think as a fellow pear cropped or long is better. I have a long body though. Need to define my waist most of the time.

Jellybean23 · 06/06/2022 22:21

Why not look for a coatigan instead? They look smart

downtonupton · 07/06/2022 00:59

I have some nice ones from White Stuff not the greatest collection at the moment but there are some nice ones

I also like some of these- the kimono ones are nice www.fatface.com/women/clothing/knitwear?prefn1=style&prefv1=cardigans|kimonos

popularinthe80s · 07/06/2022 07:04

Agree with @Judystilldreamsofhorses and @Oddbutnotodd- try the cropped or the long. The short will draw attention to your lovely waist; the long will skim the hips and lengthen you (oddly enough).
That's if you want to achieve these things, of course - I accept that not everyone wants to!

hugoagogo · 07/06/2022 07:54

esprit
You haven't said what colour/thickness you are after and whether buttons are required.

resuwen · 08/06/2022 19:38

This - I really like this! www.whitestuff.com/womens/knitwear/mid-blue-tiana-cardi/

Buttons not required, I'll never do it up! Colour/thickness, no preference really, though ability to coordinate with the rest of my wardrobe is important - I prefer muted or darker tones rather than pastels or brights.

Some really great tips here, in places I would never think of looking. Thanks so much for your help!

I'm a short pear and I wear cropped french connection jumpers . I now have in 4 colours.
The long line cardigan in my wardrobe I've kept, but I don't think suit.
