Earrings and itchy ears

Stopped wearing earrings on a regular basis a few years ago due to hyper sensitivity and red, itchy ears after just an hour or so. More recently I decided to give it another go as holes were starting to close over and this time, thought about dipping the earring hook into antihistamine cream, and rubbing the cream on the holes in my ears. So far, both silver and gold seem to have no effect on my ears any more and I can now wear earrings all day long, all night long and there's no reaction!

Whenever I change earrings I always put a small blob of the cream onto my ears and again, dip the hook into the cream before putting them in. Game changer!! Hope this is useful for anyone else who has suffered from itchy reactions to earrings. (I had previously tried, hypoallergenic earrings; painting them with nail varnish, but neither worked, until now and antihistamine cream - the stuff you use for insect bites ;-) from Superdrug.

Thanks for this OP ... I could have written this! Also worn earrings all my life and have several I wear in rotation and out of the blue one ear hole is suddenly red, itchy and gunky and feels hard inside.

Weirdly I've suddenly developed either eczema or dermatitis under one eye.

Wondering if it's all hormone related as I'm peri menopause.

@GoinSouth

Is it the 1% hydrocortisone? That's the only bite and sting relief cream I can find.

Yes, that's the one - the bite and sting relief cream antihistamine.

I'm just about to try earrings again. I put some cheap ones to see if they were still pierced, and took them out straight away, then within an hour one hole was crusting. Will try this thanks.

Will try this. I have tried Savlon in the past when I have had sore ears with good result. I use it when I haven't had earrings in for a while.

I started getting a reaction to the studs I had my ears pierced with many years ago and wondered whether it was something in the 9ct gold, or that they were plated and it had worn off.

I seem to be reacting to everything these days :(

Just came back to say this seems to work, thanks! I actually discovered I have 6 holes still pierced in my ears from my teens! I've been successfully wearing some Oliver Bonas studs. The reaction is minimal. After over 20 years of not wearing earrings I am super pleased.

Could be, stainless steel, niobium and titanium are the most hypoallergenic metals if you find you're reacting

Eek definitely try stainless steel, niobium or titanium instead. Solace jewellery does plain studs Trend Tonic (me!) Does funky studs all hypoallergenic
