Can I tone down over bright highlights at home?

Hi everyone,
im a natural brunette curly shoulder length hair and due to emerging grey wanted to trying having a few highlights in the T zone. They put so many in that now the upper part of my hair is almost completely blonde with dark underneath. That makes it sound awful, it’s really not but it’s such a contrast and I’m wondering if I can put another colour over the top to tone the contrast down a bit?

I’ve been doing a bit of reading and it seems the worry here is that you put brown on top and the highlights go green! Def want to avoid this. Any advice would be fab thank you.

When did you get them? I find with mine it takes a few washes to tone them down. I also use a purple shampoo.

Purple shampoo takes the brassiness out of blonde highlights but that doesn't sound like your problem.

I think you need to call the salon and ask them to correct it, I certainly wouldn't want to mess around with home dyes yet.

Got them 3 weeks ago.. I did have a look at purple shampoo but I wondered if that would make it brighter.
I’m not keen to go back, as when I left the salon I said I was super happy with it (I was), and I fear that it would be seen as a complaint, and the man was lovely. It’s just a little… bright.

I'd also talk to salon. My highlights dull down after a few weeks, plus you will get used to them - so it might be OK anyway and you will make things worse by fiddling. people thought I'd changed my hair colour when i had them done last time, but after 2 weeks its back to usual colour post highlights

GrandRapids · 02/06/2022 10:19

Purple shampoo will make them look icy blonde

Can you post a photo?

starlingdarling · 02/06/2022 10:38

Purple shampoo makes my blonde look brighter so I don't think that's a good option. You'd need a darker toner.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I’ll upload some pics showing the top colour and the colour underneath…

I would go and some low lights put in, that will break up the block colour

Basilbrushgotfat · 02/06/2022 12:51

Definitely go back...ring them first. Say its nit really what you asked for / expected, lovely colour but there's too much of it for you and you've ended up with hair one colour on top and another underneath. Be specific about what you did want - eg blended sun-kissed highlights

RosyappleA · 02/06/2022 18:48

This happens to me often I think they just put so many foils in I end up with one colour. This time I will ask the lady to use them more sparingly!

Purple shampoo makes it more ashy which makes it less bothersome for me. Fudge brand is great or even the loreal serie expert. I have also had a one of those all over dyes that washes out faster put on top I forget what they call it. They should at least try to put toner on yours for a while if you go back. Or one of these semi-permanent all over colours as the colour underneath still shines through when I get that done and it ends up really gloss. In fact I think it is called a gloss!

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 02/06/2022 18:55

I wouldn't put a box dye over it. That's like playing Russian roulette - you could end up with orange, green or purplish black. (I've had all three with "dark blonde" box dyes...)

You need lowlights in your natural colour, but I don't think the salon will do it for free, given that you were happy when you left and there's nothing objectively wrong with your hair. They might give you a discount as a goodwill gesture.

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 02/06/2022 18:56

You have lovely hair, by the way!

raffegiraffe · 02/06/2022 19:33

Try shine drops in bronde. Mixed with your conditioner and left on. It'll darken them

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/06/2022 19:37

Go back! They shouldn't have put so many in, they can break it up using some low lights .

Hi - can you post a link of those please? I too have the same problem. Thank you

raffegiraffe · 05/06/2022 21:33

I'll try I've not tried to do a link before despite years on MN..

I think I did it. They are called shrine, not shine as I wrote

AthenaPopodopolous · 05/06/2022 21:44

Just buy a semi permanent dark blonde box dye to put over it.
