Shampoo for greasy hair

Minnie123456 · 02/06/2022 00:02

Dd is 8. I've noticed her hair is getting greasy between washes. I wash her hair twice a week using Childs Farm Strawberry and Mint Shampoo and use Dream Lengths conditioner on the ends. I normally let her hair air dry. Her hair is very fine and she would sometimes get a bit of a dry scalp.
I think her hormones are starting to kick in. She has been brushing her own hair recently so not sure if this has anything to do with it.

What gentle shampoo could I try to help with the greasniess?

Blow drying it will help, just use a heat protector. I also find changing up my shampoo regularly helps with the greasiness

OrangeBlossom28 · 02/06/2022 00:05

Cantu cleansing shampoo is really lovely and good for oily roots.

RaindropsOnRoses12 · 02/06/2022 02:40

Alberto balsam - green one . Cheap aswell!

sunlovingcriminal · 02/06/2022 03:14

I too have very fine hair (albeit lots of it!). My advice would be to use a gentle shampoo but to do away with the conditioner. Funnily enough Johnson's baby shampoo works well in my hair!

My hair hates conditioner! As my hair is so fine, the conditioner just weighs it down, coats it and makes it greasier.

Corty02 · 02/06/2022 04:44

Changing shampoo every time after the tube has become empty makes sense.

Northernsoullover · 02/06/2022 04:48

You may just need to wash it more frequently. My hair gets oily after one day. No different types of shampoo or 'training' helps.

SirYawnsAlot · 02/06/2022 05:49

The cheapest supermarkets own shampoo in a citrus or apple are as good if not better as the branded ones - topped up with a dry shampoo.

this is rubbish advice. The more you wash, the quicker it gets greasy. Starting this cycle on an 8 year olds hair would be silly.

I also have the cantu cleansing shampoo. Very fine curly hair. I usually only use conditioner, but i use the cantu once a month to cleanse. DD has my fine hair but hers is stick straight and weighed down easily. I shampoo hers once a week with the cantu. Works very well.

FancyFelix · 02/06/2022 06:40

It's not bad advice. I certainly wouldn't take advice on cleaning hair from someone who thinks it can be done with conditioner.

Different people have different hair types, why is that so hard to understand for some. It drives me bananas when people tell me I have greasy hair because I wash it too much. Why on earth would anyone presume to know another's hair better than they do??

In response to the OP, I would suggest moving away from children's shampoo to a regular adult one. I had to do this with my children at around 8-9 as the gentle shampoo simply wasn't getting it clean.

Sunshineandrainbow · 02/06/2022 10:50

Have you tried baby shampoo the yellow one.

My fav shampoo for my greasy hair was lush I love juicy. But they have stopped selling it :(

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/06/2022 13:00

Mines oily so I wash it as often as it needs. Sometimes I use Vosene to exfoliate the scalp.

Mount2Climb · 02/06/2022 13:08

I recommend Body Shop Ginger shampoo and wash every other day. In winter it might be fine to wash hair every third day but in warm weather every second day at least.

Even if hair doesn't look greasy the third day it doesn't smell great and dry shampoos or hair mists cause more build up.

Lemon juice or vinegar watered down helps oil and dandruff. Shampoo. Apply the mixture to scalp. Let it sit 10 minutes then rinse it off and condition the ponytail length only.

When she's older she can choose what hair routine she wants to follow but for now you need to tackle her hair as children can be cruel.

VerifiedBot2351 · 02/06/2022 13:16

Try Elvive Rebalancing Shampoo, with clay in it. It probably needs more regular washing too.

Agree with PP that the more you wash the greasier it gets, is absolute rubbish!

RosyappleA · 02/06/2022 17:48

@FancyFelix Also agree with you. For my uni exams I would not wash my hair for agesss. Thinking after that it would last longer. Well nope the second i would wash it, it would be greasy within a day.
The way I explain it ppl is that my hair just reaches a certain level of greasiness very quickly and stays there. So past day one I am a greasy mess.
As your DD is only 8 try tresemme deep cleansing we are all greasy in the family and that is what we use.
For the adults here taking vitamin b5 (used for acne) 1g daily works better than any shampoo for me.

Minnie123456 · 04/06/2022 01:20

Thank you everyone for your replies, there are a few suggestions that I can try.
@YerAWizardHarry I thought blow drying was bad for your hair but i'll give this a try.
@sunlovingcriminal think I will ditch the conditioner as the one I use is quite thick, hoping a detangling spray will do the job as her hair is prone to tangles.

@Minnie123456 i mean the heat isn’t ideal but use a heat protector and keep the temperature low and it should be fine every so often! My hair gets greasier quicker if I don’t blow dry it

Minnie123456 · 04/06/2022 01:28

@Sunshineandrainbow I used this when she was younger then moved to the Child's Farm, might go back to it.
@Mount2Climb i'm currently using this on my hair as I heard good reviews on it, but I don't like it☹️ it makes my hair feel really dry, though my hair is dyed blonde so that could be why.

Looks like i'll have to up the hair washing as well 🙈

sunlovingcriminal · 04/06/2022 07:40

@Minnie123456 I would avoid putting detangler on it. This is the thing about fine hair- the more "product" you put on it, the greasier it gets, as your effectively weighing heavy down on each fine shaft of hair.

My next top tip would be to wash it, towel dry it, then blow dry it, and then brush it. Don't try and brush it wet, as fine hair just tangles!

nearlyspringyay · 04/06/2022 07:52

The citrus herbal essences is good and I boost my kids with dry shampoo through the week. It helps with the texture too, it's not so flat.

WreckTangled · 04/06/2022 07:54

I have to wash my hair every day and have done since I was a teen. Dd is 11 now and has been washing her hair daily for a while, people who say washing it frequently makes it more greasy have clearly never had fine greasy hair. Dd gets really hot and sweaty over night too which doesn't help so I change her pillow case more frequently than everyone else.

I've been using the tresemme sulfate free shampoo for a few months now (no conditioner) and have found it to be really good. I also find that shampooing twice helps too.

Child's farm is probably too mild for her hair now she's getting older. Try an adult shampoo

Theuserwithnoname · 04/06/2022 08:10

I struggled with greasy hair for years, forever changing shampoo I tried everything from the cheap supermarket own brand to some of the most expensive and nothing worked. I was so miserable.

Loads of hair shampoos are made with plastics and they just weighed down my fine hair which would often be greasy before the day was out. I decided to try lush shampoos as they were completely natural and really gentle. My favourite is now discontinued but would highly recommend Wasabi Shan Kui or Seanik (which is a shampoo bar). Seanik is probably my favourite of the two, it leaves my hair feeling really light with lots of movement, clean and thick and it doesn't need washed every day.

I also try to steer away from conditioners unless really light as they weigh down my hair. Currently using Super Milk conditioning spray from Lush. I spray the tiniest bit on my hands and work it through after my shower. It's more than enough and has a lovely sweet smell too.

Lush is definitely a bit pricier on the face of it but products last forever and my hair has never been in better condition so couldn't recommend them more. The staff are really knowledgeable so can point you in the direction of products that will suit and will give you free testers of anything you want to try before you buy.

Anonnnnnnm · 04/06/2022 08:10

Don't brush too much, that makes it worse. Also blow dry, air drying is awful when you have greasy hair (from experience)

Anonnnnnnm · 04/06/2022 08:12

Also only condition the ends. Dry shampoo is also great! Stops you from over washing and getting into a bad cycle from a young age of washing hair too much.
