What to wear to this party - size 16/18

We are going to a milestone birthday party which is being held in a cricket club; the venue is very casual, like a sports bar inside and grass area outside with picnic tables. My friend, who is organising this for her DH, has shown me what she is wearing and it’s quite a ‘dressy dress,’ quite formal actually.

I absolutely hate getting dressed up, particularly when I’ve got so big since having DC. For this sort of party/venue could I get away with linen trousers, smart top, and summer wedge shoes? I live in jeans usually.

None of my dresses fit right at the moment, black trousers seems too office-like, and I really don’t want to spend a lot of money on an outfit that I won’t wear again soon. In our town we only have an M&S, H&M and Sainsbury's for ladies clothing. I don’t like buying clothes online as they never fit. I could go to another town if I really should get something else to wear.

I'm the same size. I personally (38H) bust find a V neck is far more flattering, along with 3/4 length sleeves. A heel or wedge does add to a more formal posture and look, but don't wear them if not comfortable.

A cricket club is casual, but a milestone event may not be. You could have a nicer top, jeans and small wedge or a skirt and top. Personally, I'd wear something smart but not black tie evening event! Wear what flatters and makes you comfortable.

Wear what you feel comfortable in, veering on the side of smart rather than too casual.

Sometimes I find that the hosts for parties get more dressed up than some guests, so I wouldn’t be too intimidated by what your friend is wearing.

Shes hosting the party so will be dressing up, but that doesnt mean you have to.
Id wear a nice dress maybe or i think linen trousers and a nice top. Whatever youd feel good

DietCoke99 · 31/05/2022 23:31

I would say the opposite to what the above poster said with the red dress. I think structured dresses suit curvier figures more. So it doesn't need to be flashy. You might already have something in your wardrobe or get an ok outfur from the stores near you but you could get your hair blow dried and make up professionally done, good nails a statement jewellery piece. That's what I have done and that made me feel good

shinynewapple22 · 31/05/2022 23:49

I think linen trousers and a nice top would be fine .

Mindgone · 31/05/2022 23:51

I think what you’ve described sounds just perfect, you’ll be comfortable and happy, which will make you smile more, which is your best look!
And it’s not your party, so no one will mind what you wear anyway!

Wear some nice jewellery with the outfit you suggested

This dress is one of the most flattering I have ever owned. It is really comfortable and works with trainers, heels, wedges. sandals, with or without a cardigan or denim jacket..makes me look like I have got a waist, hides big belly..I cannot recommend this style highly enough.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/06/2022 16:11

What you have suggested sounds perfect. Hair , nails , makeup etc all done and a bit of jewellery and you will look great.

lurchermummy · 04/06/2022 11:58

@DelphiniumBlue I have never come across this brand before but they have some lovely things

bananaboats · 04/06/2022 19:39

Do you know any other guests that are going? I think your friend hosting will naturally be more dressed up but you don't want to feel out of place if everyone is dressy. Im the same size as you and always wear dresses I personally find them much more flattering than trousers.
