Life after box dye

hashtagjubilee · 31/05/2022 15:30

So during lockdown I moved over to Josh wood box dye
It seemed quite good and I liked the touch up products and definitely preferred the £25 price tag vs £120 that I was paying for highlights

But now my hair feels very flat

Is there a middle way that I can go and have something done every now and then use the box dyes in between ??
Or will no hairdresser touch me if I have used dreaded box dyes??

I'm thinking about getting the Josh Wood box dye. Is it better than the usual L'Oreal/Garnier stuff?
A hairdresser will be able to colour over a box dye, and shouldn't judge you for not being able to drop £100+ every few weeks on salon appointments!

The hairdressers will touch it, will just take time to get your desired result

I used josh wood and the colour came out much too warm (read: red/orange). I went to a hairdresser for a colour correction consultation and they said I'll need to fade the colour as much as I can by fading it out with harsh clarifying shampoos for 4-6 weeks before they'll touch it. I'm doing that now and it's faded quite a lot so I am hoping to get my new salon colour done soon. My hair is like straw but at least it's closer to the right colour.

Don't know if this helps at all but a decent salon shouldn't be put off, they just might ask you to leave it a while if it's freshly dyed.

Sorry, I missed the point of your post didn't I. I've got covid brain fog and didn't mean to jump on your thread and change the subject!

I use the Josh Wood all over colour and my hairdresser happily puts in highlights over it.
I find it works well as I can use a root touch-up box dye in between to cover the greys and so don't need the hairdresser doing the colour as often.

Forgot to say that yes, I think it is better.
Bit of a nuisance as I have to order over the internet and it's more expensive than other box dyes, but I think it's (and I'm) worth it Smile

PS Love your name, btw; classic quote!

Thank you 😊

And do we think highlights are a better way?
Thanks for all the replies

My (top end) hairdresser always recommends semi permanent dye for mixed grey hair.

It leaves the tonal differences apparent so it's not a flat block colour. It's also kinder and less likely to go black with colour layering if you retouch regularly. And, as it's semi permanent it does fade out well if you need to change colour or if it's a bit dark, it's temporary.

Sadly semi permanent dyes are becoming less popular as people want permanent, without understanding to cost to your hair or your look.

It's easy to get the salon look at home with semi permanent dyes. Really inexpensive too.
