Why are my fingernails so stubby and short?

(Inspired by the 'Why are my toenails so tiny' thread, I thought I would ask a similar question about my fingernails)

I have really short, stubby fingernails. I feel like they look so childlike. I paint them with a clear varnish to try and make them look as best they can. I have to keep my nails short due to my job so fake nails aren't really an option.

Is there anything that can help? Can pushing the cuticles back help or is this just the shape I'm stuck with? I can't see any half moons on my nails either.

I know yours aren't, but this is a really common problem with bitten nails. I've found this video offers a useful explanation of how to deal with it.

I get a white stripe across the tip of my nails, French manicure stylee. So that's because I used to bite my nails? Interesting.
