Is there a makeup shortage?

I've visited Boots and Superdrug recently, in two different towns and all branches seem to have a noticeable shortage of make up. Lots of gaps and missing items. Has anyone found this?

Yes!! I was in Boots today to pick up a few things and wondered what on Earth was going on. There was so much that wasn't in stock, so lots of unsightly empty spaces on the displays. Almost no L'Oréal True Match foundations. Very strange.

Come to think of it, I seem to recall the shelves being bare about 6 weeks ago when I went to a very large boots with the massive beauty selection. Most of the 'higher end' brands were only half in stock. Like Nars, Laura Mercier, Kylie, Fenty, etc. it was weird.

megletthesecond · 28/05/2022 22:27

Yes. I noticed this too. Same in primark.

Crazykefir · 28/05/2022 22:29

Yes it's been like this for ages.

Hohofortherobbers · 28/05/2022 22:32

Yes, I was in sainsburys this morning and their fragrance display was desimated.

MarmaladeLime · 28/05/2022 22:37

Yup. Chanel counter even said they aren't getting the information on when the next stock is expected anymore. They just get odd bits to restock.

Cheeseandlobster · 28/05/2022 22:45

I went to Home Bargains earlier and the womens deodorant, toothpaste and shower gel sections were also decimated. It was odd

jackstini · 28/05/2022 22:50

Not sure why people are surprised

This is happening in every category - food, household stuff etc.

Few reasons - there are still shipping delays carrying on from Covid, Suez canal issue and now Russia Ukraine war. Plus there were massive energy restrictions in China only a few months ago that hampered manufacturing

The consequences will last 12-18 months and will affect many things

NewYorkLassie · 28/05/2022 22:54

Yes been like this for a while. Hit or Miss whether I can get what I’m looking for in John Lewis.

Also seeing a shortage of tights. Had to resort to buying super expensive ones, thankfully they seem to be lasting.

Ponderingwindow · 28/05/2022 22:54

I haven’t been able to reorder my allergen free shampoo and conditioner in months and I’m on my last bottles. I barely got safe toothpaste before running out. I had to cut the last tube open and scrape out the last bits. I was about to have to switch to plain baking soda.

FloweryCurtainTwitcher · 28/05/2022 22:59

Lots of brands cut production during covid
Lots is imported from Europe and Brexit has scuppered that. Some brands like aqua di parma have been honest and said shipping to the Uk is a major hassle now. Its not just perfume/toiletries but clothing brand from eu are in very short supply as well.

Oceanus · 28/05/2022 23:30

I'm in Portugal and I noticed it too just last week. Went to MAC and they didn't have any of the eyeshadows I wanted in stock, ended up having to pick sth on the spot.
But tbh what reeeally caught my eye was the price of perfume. It's gone up by quite a bit since last year. Usually Spain is always way cheaper but there's not much difference now. Went to an outlet mall there and the prices were just "normal" whereas before I could get all the Carolina Herrera, Hermés and Prada really cheap. I feel that regular perfume is now priced like Chanel a couple of years ago.
The UD palettes also went up by almost 10% since last year. One that was 50euros last year is now about 56ish and I saw it going for 59 online.

NoToLandfill · 28/05/2022 23:30

Probably Brexit shipping hassle, extra duties and taxes. We aren't in a free trade zone any more. Things are going to get more expensive.

I hope the people who voted for Brexit understand their stupidity now 😒

tkwal · 28/05/2022 23:43

I think its similar to what food suppliers are doing. They seem to be running stock levels down and making quantities smaller when they bring the items back.

Oceanus · 28/05/2022 23:44

I used to order loads from the UK before Brexit, including makeup. Even with the currency not being the same I still managed to save but I wouldn't dare now tbh. With that over 23% being added now it just isn't worth it. It also has to go through customs and I can't be bothered to wait for months for something. The hassle isn't worth it for me.
The shops that were really worth it in terms of price don't deliver here and I've tried a couple of those third-party delivery systems (what are those called again?) but those weren't great and in the end it really just doesn't pay anymore. I'll miss Superdrug and TKmaxx and Boots though!

MarmaladeLime · 29/05/2022 07:13

I've had a google and there's also a shortage of ethoxydiglycol so the prices have gone up and that's in things like fake tan and some fave cream aparantly.

NoToLandfill · 29/05/2022 07:35

Platinum I think lots of people voted for Brexit on the human immigration side of things. Not realising we would be losing the right to free trade. As most adults only know a time of free trade. I work in logistics so I know about shipping and taxes and duties on stuff coming into the UK. And I really did predict shortages. And price rises. Our world has changed and we aren't going to get back to where we were. And yes I do point this out to any pro Brexit people who are convinced when covid is over it will all go back to normal. It really won't.

NoToLandfill · 29/05/2022 07:38

I'm worried about when there is a bonfire of employment rights, as lots are from EU laws. Maternity leave and protection from being fired when pregnant I'm expecting to be decimated. And when politicians can't even agree on what a woman actually is how on earth are they going to prioritize women's unique employment rights. Well they aren't and we are going to go backwards.

I'm as remain as they come, and brexit in undoubtedly a factor. But the poster above literally just said she had seen the same in Portugal and Spain.

Im quite convinced this would only happen under a tory gov.

Depressingly not. I'm not sure Kier-can't-define-a-woman-Starmer would do differently on the erosion of women's right front.

I feel depressed that at some point I'll have to choose between voting for human rights that seemingly don't include those for women or tradional tory understanding the definition of woman, but eroding all human rights. What a choice

purplesequins · 30/05/2022 07:35

noticed similar here (europe).

I suspect it's a result of the harsh lockdowns in china where most of the stuff or parts of it like the packaging is manufactured.
