To start wearing a wig

My hair has always been thin but over the last few years it has gotten worse. It started to thin at the front but is now appearing thin on top and you can see my scalp. The GP is no help and I’ve heard various blood tests but it is really knocking my confidence. I’ve started to look at transplants, possibly looking at having the hair drawn in but I’m wondering about looking at wigs. Where do I start? We don’t have any wigs shops anywhere near us so I’m looking online. Are they easy to care for? Easy to get on? And mainly, will they fall off? Can you swim in them? I’ve attached a picture of my hairline which shows how thin my hair is.

QVC shopping channels on TV sell wigs. You can send them back for a full refund.

Might be worth a try. Nice to try on at home at your leisure rather than in a shop and feeling under pressure.

I think it would be worth getting a copy of your blood tests. Iron at the lower end of ‘normal’ isn’t high enough to support hair growth.
B12 / Vitamin D at the lower end of normal can also cause hair loss. Drs just very often see ‘normal’ on the lab report & that’s it.

what age are you? HRT helps with peri/menopausal hair loss.

I did know someone through work who was thinning a lot, she went to see a trichologist, she was distraught. She did wear a wig for a while but her hair did eventually grow back but I was never in a position to ask how.
YWNBU to think about wigs, would you be able to pay to go and see about fitting at a place such as
www.optimahair.co.uk/our-treatments/hair-systems-for-women/

dreamgirlzhairextensions.co.uk/hair-loss/

I hope someone with experience comes along soon & can offer some advice Flowers

I think you would be a good candidate for a 'hair system'. They are like a wig but you wear it all the time, and it's attached to your own hair I think. People with alopecia and some people who have been on chemo use them.

I've been reading about hair toppers which I think are a lighter version of wigs. May be worth you looking at them.

I don’t know anything much about wigs but I would suspect it’s best to buy the best you can afford. Maybe find a hairdresser who specialises? I’m very sure there are plenty of excellent video tutorials out there also.

I had cancer and was fitted for a wig at the hospital. My hair has grown back but I still wear the wig for work and going out nearly two years later. My own hair is really short underneath - a pixie cut.

I don't swim in it, I heard of someone who used an old one to do that though. I wouldn't, I'd just wear a swim cap maybe.

They are a bit uncomfortable- but in my opinion worth it. Really easy to get on and care for. I have the Codi wig by Rene of Paris, it's a fibre wig and l get lots of compliments on my lovely hair.

I would recommend travelling to a wig shop if you possibly can though it would be really hard to buy online - there are some sites that will take a return but what a hassle.

Can I tell you that you almost certainly notice this problem much more than other people?
My take on it is that it doesn’t look too bad. Yes your hair is thinner than average but people will be more more interested in a kind face.

Might be an idea to see an endocrinologist to get your hormones checked. It could be female pattern baldness due to androgens. You could look into getting Rogaine prescribed. It's minoxidil & afaik you are in this for ever once started. There was a hair loss program on tv a while ago, the trichologist was called Eva Proudman & she seemed very caring & produced good results with minoxidil and laser helmets etc. Maybe google reviews on her clinic? I am in no way affiliated! Good luck.

A friend had some improvement with vitamin b6 and zinc (I don't know if it was one or the other or both)
I've been taking a b complex and my hair definitely feels thicker.
It might be worth looking into any supplements that could help.

There are some good wig shops online - like Simply Wigs. They often have promotions with good discounts. Jon Renau is a good brand. I think you look like you have enough hair for a topper. These clip into your existing hair. They can look incredibly natural and are lighter/cooler/cheaper to wear than a full wig. They can be a bit fiddly to put on in the right place, but over time you will get the hang of it. You cannot swim in them. There are many videos on YT who have really in depth videos on wigs, which is a really good starting point.

I cannot stress how worthwhile it is to go to a good wig salon. Their expertise is invaluable.

Thanks all. My mum has mentioned it a few times and it does make me self conscious. I’ll also look at hair toppers and see where the nearest wig shop might be. Doctor mentioned low vitamin D so I take that everyday. My hair just doesn’t seem to grow. Same with my eyebrows they’re also very thin. I’m going to book an appointment with Eva Proudman as she runs a clinic local to us.

@olympicsrock, that is really kind thank you. I think it just make me feel so self conscious as it’s right at the front of my head. And overall my hair is very thin. I know I’d never judge someone on their hair but for me I’m quite self conscious anyway and it feels like something else that makes me stand out when I want to blend in.

I think it's fairly common now isn't it . I follow a lady on Instagram who designs them as she has thin hair . They are £1200 plus but they look great!

olympicsrock · 29/05/2022 16:55

oh good mothers are terrible at this kind of thing . Just ignore. I’m sure she means well. Why do mothers tell us that we are too fat / thin/ loosing hair/ bad skin etc….

olympicsrock · 29/05/2022 16:56

God not good

My mother is the Queen of “helpful” comments. They range from my appearance to my house decoration and how I should deal with my kids with special needs.
