Balayage now ginger - toner recommendations?

Hello!

I have very dark brown hair, and after not dying my hair for 15 years decided to get brown balayage as I wanted a change.

That was two months ago, and now the colour has turned gingery. I hate it. I will probably do a block colour in a few months but for now, trying to find a toner to use.

I already wash my hair with Redken brownlights shampoo but it’s not doing much, so suspect I need an all over toner to get the colour back to a brown. Any recommendations? I keep googling but it seems the market is focussed on blonde hair!

I'd go to a salon and have a professional toner put on-they don't usually cost much. After that use blue shampoo

BrunoMadrigal · 23/05/2022 12:57

I have been thinking of doing that. Maybe that’s the answer!

Op I've just been to the hairdresser for this exact reason (same colour hair as you) and has really cooled it down. Blue shampoos do very little, I find. Maybe if you left it on for a long time, but I would worry that could strip your hair.

Just ask for an ashy cool toner and maybe an Olaplex treatment. I find this brightens the colour a bit too.

I think that you're supposed to go back to the hairdresser to get the toner redone once a month, but I probably go every other month.

Blue conditioner works but you need a decent one. Buy it from the hairdressers, not from the supermarket.

Fenola'No More Orange' works wonders.

I'm brunette with lighter/blond nuts. I use aveda black malva conditioner which stops the brassy bits. Another at home treatment is evo fabuloso which comes in a range of colours

*bits not nuts 🤣

Colorwow are advertising a product to do this, there are videos online.

Matrix dark envy mask is good for reducing red. It’s only temporary though. It’s green rather than blue.

Fanola no more orange. Wash hair then bung this shampoo on, cover with disposable shower cap or plastic bag for 10-15 mins, rinse out. Job done.

Thank you everyone!

I have ordered Fanola No More Orange and will use that first. If no change, I’ll head to the hairdresser for toner.

Hope one of those options work!
