Am I meant to notice a difference with a silk pillowcase?!

I received a silk pillowcase as a birthday present recently. I was a bit baffled, but DM was very excited on my behalf (it wasn’t a present from her). I have been using it for a week and I fail to see what difference it makes! I don’t look or feel any different - is it a long term benefit thing?! Or a load of tosh?

Isn't it supposed to stop hair getting tangled ? Amongst other things I'm sure but no idea what !

SugarMiceInTheRain · 21/05/2022 23:08

I think it's supposed to help your hair stay smoother and less tangled. On the packaging for mine it said something about being better for your skin due to natural antibacterial properties of silk, but I'm not convinced. Been using silk pillowcases for a month now and no discernible improvement to my hair or skin so am a bit perplexed as to why people were raving about them 🤷‍♀️

mnahmnah · 21/05/2022 23:10

Yes, apparently! I had vaguely heard they were of some benefit to your skin. But I had to Google exactly what the point of them were! I also received a matching silk eye mask. Not obvious presents for me and pretty pricey, hence I was baffled! It looks out of place being different to the other pillow too.
But I can say that neither my skin or hair seem any different…

I love mine, struggle to sleep without it. My hair is smoother and shinier and I don't have face crumple in the morning.

mnahmnah · 21/05/2022 23:12

Interesting. I shall stick with it! It doesn’t even feel different to sleep on than my usual pillowcase

Silk bedding is great if you enjoy sliding out of bed onto the floor and forever hoisting the duvet back over you in the night, as for silk pillowcases they don't much for me, my hair still looks like a birds nest in the mornings if I use one 😂

Gazelda · 21/05/2022 23:13

I love mine. My hair is less tangled in the morning. The silk seems to keep cool all night long.

I've also got a silk scrunchie to tie my hair up at night because I hate it around my face. The scrunchie holds firmly but also comes out easily. I'm a big silk fan.

mnahmnah · 21/05/2022 23:13

Well I wash my hair every morning, so it doesn’t matter what state it’s in when I wake up anyway! I’d be more interested in my skin looking more alive, however!

It stops me waking up with lines on my face. I think long term that probably means it helps reduce wrinkles?

mnahmnah · 21/05/2022 23:15

Well, less wrinkles long-term sounds a plan! Obviously what the gift-giver intended. Shall I be flattered or offended?!

If I use a silk pillowcase & brush my hair before I go to bed, when I get up in the morning it still looks like I brushed it.
It's neat enough I can answer the front door.

If I don't use a silk pillowcase & brush my hair before I go to bed, when I get up it looks like I was up trying to backcomb it in the dark without a mirror, then gave up & fell in a blackberry bush.

No idea if it's any good for my skin, but it definitely makes a massive difference to my hair.
Less split ends & less tangles (my hair tangles very easily).

mnahmnah · 21/05/2022 23:30

Perhaps it depends on your hair type? Mine is fine, above the shoulder, easy to manage

OP posts:
LaWench · 22/05/2022 09:25

OP, maybe that's it. My hair is long, thick, wavy and course and I have lots of it. So waking up to it being flatter and smoother is a blessing.

TeeBee · 22/05/2022 09:27

My hair is prone to breakage and was getting terrible on the side I slept most in. My hairdresser recommended a silk pillow and it's got much better.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/05/2022 09:30

I'm a fan as is DD but we have
long, thick hair. Mine is coarse and wavy. I also have dry skin and cotton draws a lot of moisure out of my skin, so I have fewer dry patches sleeping on silk. I'm hoping it is limiting wrinkles too.

itsnotmeitsu · 22/05/2022 21:42

Not sure if a silk pillowcase helps with smoothing hair, although I know it's supposed to. I use a silk pillowcase and my hair makes its own mind up about what direction I'm going to wake up with. But I'm sure it helps with skin creases - or avoiding them. After exchanging my cotton pillowcase for a silk one several years ago I no longer wake up with creases on my face. I have next to no wrinkles and I'm well past menopause. Obviously there'll be more to that than a pillowcase, but it must definately help.

ArabeI · 23/05/2022 12:16

Is it real silk? I have satin-type and mulberry silk and the latter makes the biggest difference to my hair. Though I prefer a silk hair bonnet, in terms of most beneficial.

mnahmnah · 23/05/2022 12:54

Yes it’s 100% pure silk.

Not sure I ever have pillow creases on my face anyway.

I think it is clearly wasted on me 😝
