Modern holiday wardrobe?

We're going to the Canaries soon and I was just mentally thinking though my planned packing list and realised it probably hasn't changed that much for a loooong time. I usually take:

Swimwear (2 X bikinis and sometimes a swimsuit)
Vest tops/camis (sort of looser Grecian strap/rope-twist strap ones rather than the tight ones)
Linen-mix paperbag-type shorts
Midi-length sundresses
Maybe a pair of hareem pants or linen-mix wide-legs
Midi skirt
A couple of nice short-sleeve tops
Birkenstocks and flat metallic sandals

What the heck else are people wearing on hot holidays now?! I'm late thirties, 12-14, and quite pale.

Forgot to say - I like Hush, Toast, sort of vaguely boho-ish holiday style. I generally aim or it not to be immediately obvious where I'm from 😁 (I normally get mistaken for German!)

What is wrong with that ?

Laquila · 21/05/2022 10:14

I suppose nothing is wrong with it. I'm just asking whether the stuff people wear on warm-weather holidays is different now (as I haven't been away for a while and also haven't really been paying attention) and also whether anyone has ideas for how I could easily update this list. I think it's just a pretty standard S&B question, really.

It all sounds lovely

minipie · 21/05/2022 11:43

Sounds fine! The one thing you haven’t got, which I used to think was pointless but is actually really useful, is some kind of poolside cover up. Something you can throw on when the wind gets up or you need to pop back to your room etc. Unless one of your dresses does that job.

chipsandpeas · 21/05/2022 11:44

just take what you feel comfortable in and dont worry about what others take
im in my 40s and would probably take everything in your list

BusterGonad · 21/05/2022 11:53

I'm going to Thailand and so far I've got my usual 2 bikinis (Por Moi) I've got huge boobs and can't get cheap non bra sized ones so I stick with what I've got until they fall apart. One is red floral print and one plain red. I got them to mix and match. 2 patterned vests with crochet details across the back. 2 summer dresses, one patterned hawaiian style, one pale yellow. One Levi's denim mini skirt and 2 pairs of denim shorts. I'll obviously pack jeans and a few tshirts. I'll stick with my usual trainers and 1 pair of black sandals. I'm going for 4 weeks so I'll find an apartment with a washing machine.

BusterGonad · 21/05/2022 11:56

And I've got 2 pull on viscose v neck shift type dresses, non fitted to put on over my bikini if I get up to get a drink or something.

Denim jacket for copper evenings?
Beach cover up - look up jersey dresses, feel cool when on.

Threetulips · 21/05/2022 11:57

Cooler evenings

Jersey dresses were my go to, but I've not found any decent ones this year. I have my eye on one but it's so cheap (online) and I'm worried it'll turn up like rags.

minipie · 21/05/2022 12:41

Oh yes do take some cardigans! It can be breezy and definitely cooler in the evenings

MinglingFlamingo · 21/05/2022 14:00

I'd take a couple of loose fitting T-shirts so that you can cover up a bit more if you get a bit too much sun.

And yes to a cover up to walk down to the beach/ wear to the beach bar for lunch.

Also a hat of some sort

Threetulips · 21/05/2022 15:14

Try M&S for cheap Jersey dresses, I brought one form Freeman’s - Denim Jacket from Joules.

Loving some of the New Look Tshirts as well.

Pattygonia · 21/05/2022 15:35

I also take a rash vest so I can still swim/snorkel when it's hot to protect from the sun
And a loose long linen shirt - again as sun protection - having a collar helps (but i am v pale & sunburn prone )

CinnamonJellyBeans · 21/05/2022 15:49

I've been finding the holiday-wear threads really helpful

I purchased the bra sized swimwear first, as it's most important to get that right, so I have 2 well fitting bikinis that I can actually swim in. Simply be/JD Williams have a big selection

I have been wearing shorts on holiday for years (and hating them) until someone on mumsnet S&B said they don't bother with shorts, just day time dresses, so I've bought some short dresses and they look so much nicer. I've been looking for viscose and cotton and have been really surprised by what New Look have this year; have picked up some really cute ones.

I've got 3-4 nice maxi dresses for the evening, that I had already and still look nice

Fit-flop fitflops for sight seeing, fitflops sandals and I can't decide between walking sandals or white trainers for longer distances.

Varifocal sunglasses

I'm still looking for a straw hat that doesn't perch ridiculously on top of my head. There was a thread on here for big heads, but the recommended ones were quite expensive

Procrastatron · 22/05/2022 07:21

I think my holiday wardrobe is going through the same cycle as my main wardrobe. When I was in my 30s I forced myself to wear what we are told is sophisticated (holiday wear = loose linens etc) but now I’m north of 40 and we’ll into my midlife crisis I’m more keen to wear what makes me happy and comfortable.
For my upcoming holiday I have things like a boho oversized romper thing, bright oversized Ts, and contrasting bralettes that I’m happy to let peak out of necklines etc. i will of course be packing some maxi dresses for the evenings.
@CinnamonJellyBeans i have resorted to buying a plain mens Panama of Amazon. Pretty sure I ended up with an L or XL

Themidnightpig · 22/05/2022 10:43

This is mine for France next month. I'm late 20s and also very pale.

2 x swimsuits (1 bikini 1 cozzie)
1 x shirt style beach cover up (white cotton)

1 x denim shorts
1 x patterned shorts
1 x floaty trousers
1 x floaty maxi skirt

2 x cami tops (1 black 1 patterned)
1 x chambray shirt top (lose fitting)
2 x plain tees (1 white 1 black)

2 x maxi dress (1 black 1 printed)
1 x floral wide leg jumpsuit

1 x denim jacket
1 x sweatshirt (for plane mainly)

1 x nice sandles
1 x flipflops
1 x birkenstocks
1 x white trainers (mainly to travel in)

And some accessories - sunglasses, sunhat, cap, headscarf, few bits of jewellery.

I like to have options that go with each other easily which is why a lot of my clothes are quite plain eg the black cami or white t will go with any of the bottoms. Makes things easier I think! I used to buy loads of funky printed stuff then realize none of it went with anything else so couldn't put any outfits together 👀

midsomermurderess · 22/05/2022 10:52

It all sounds good. Toast has some cute summer dresses on the go like this Seasalt, while not usually a place I’d go to, has some nice, simple, linen dresses too.

Laquila · 22/05/2022 20:51

Thanks all! Yes you're right, I need a cover-up or two, and something for evenings. I have a packable Panama somewhere I think, and a rash vest.

Love that Toast sundress @midsomermurderess! That 50s madras-type check is lovely. I can't afford Toast prices now though but I have a linen-mix navy dress in the same style from M&S that gets a lot of wear.

Lineala · 22/05/2022 21:39

Have you looked at the Lydia dress in Toast. It's £100 so not too pricey and looks lovely on. I have two! One from 6 years ago that's still looking good.

midsomermurderess · 22/05/2022 21:42

Toast prices are a bit crazy now. There’s a lovely blouse going for £175! I hope it might go in a sale.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/05/2022 21:45

I have stocked up on cotton midi dresses as there as so many about this year that suit me. They roll up and take little space in a suitcase too. I have been paying more attention to accessories this year to change the look of a dress from day to night.
