If you wear sunscreen on your face....

... do you reapply it throughout the day, as per the instructions?

If you do, do you just put the new layer on top of the old (like you would if you were on a beach)? Or do you get the old stuff off and put new on?

What about if you're out for the day wearing make-up on top of the sunscreen?

I use a top up spray (currently La Roche Posay) made especially for applying over make up.

Procrastatron · 20/05/2022 15:42

I use Heliocare under my makeup, wear a hat and avoid too much direct sun exposure. This has always been ok for me and I’m pale. Last year I was introduced to spray sun creams that you can mist over your makeup and I will be picking some of this up for my holiday.

Shock Shock Shock

Spray sun creams. For over make up. What is this wizardry that you speak of.

I use Boots Soltan Once. It says it is designed for 8 hour protection (although I don't know how true it is).

Exciting isn’t it

Thanks I just bought 3 of the La Roche Posay over makeup sprays with a 25% off offer at Look Fantastic, so I hope that was worth it!

TruffleToil · 20/05/2022 16:02

I've just bought some of the La Roche Posay too.

Thank you. I'm so so so glad I asked Smile

Can someone link to the right LRP one please?

ModerationInEverything · 20/05/2022 16:10

I'm also new to the world of SPF for over make up. The Garnier one was recommended in here and I bought it because it's cheap 😂. It's not bad.

There are several of these sprays available. Ultrasun do one, as do Ambre Solaire and Garnier. I always think of them as more of a top up, though.

OceanAtTheEnd · 20/05/2022 21:51

Yes, I'm a bit twitchy about sunscreen, and it really is about using enough and re-applying thoroughly. I think I'll stick to standard ones.

Roseglen84 · 20/05/2022 22:40

I use LRP Anthelios SPF 50 in the mornings, and if I'm wearing make up my foundation also has an SPF in it, although not very high.

In the summer I also top up with a powder sunscreen throughout the day, called ColourScience brush on shield, although sometimes I forget and have never gotten burnt on my face so who knows if it's necessary. I try to stay out of direct sun anways.

whatnumber · 20/05/2022 22:55

Do any of these not sting the eyes?

RadioRouge · 20/05/2022 23:38

I use spf moisturiser first thing, then put proper sunscreen on sometime later followed by a top up with spf spray later on. In summertime I'm hardly ever outside without sunglasses and a hat.

I found the LRP one almost unusable due to it stinging my eyes.

I would shield them when spraying it on but as I got warmer and started to sweat (exercise, lots of walking on warm holidays, vigorous gardening etc.!) it ran into my eyes and string horribly.

I also thought it was greasy and unpleasant but it constantly gets good reviews so clearly works well for other people.

DieschoensteZeitdesJahres · 20/05/2022 23:53

Also meant to add that my favourite is actually a primer, Nars Smooth and Protect.

It's SPF50, vaguely "blurs" my skin, stays reasonably matte and, as it's a primer, works well with make up over it. I frequently wear it on its own, though.

I've been looking at these recently, mainly because I'm allergic to a few common sunscreen ingredients and these seem to be one of the fee that look suitable (on paper). If it's not a daft question does it make you very matt/chalky?! I'm always pretty shiny in the sun!

hihellohihello · 21/05/2022 08:37

I use Ultrasun. It's long enough lasting not to have to reapply.
