Dye that only colours grey hair?

I’ve seen Just For Men advertised on the tv. Is there an equivalent for women that only targets grey hairs? I don’t have a lot of greys but I want to cover them and leave the rest of my hair alone. Preferably a cruelty free brand.

use Just for Men?

use Just for Men?

It’s tested on animals.

I’m interested in this too.
I tried Daniel Field Watercolours but it did nothing. I’m tempted to try again, mix it with less water and leave for longer.

Justkeeppedaling · 20/05/2022 17:40

Just for Men probably doesn't target grey hairs only. How would that even be possible?
And women can use men's products too you know.

Oblomov22 · 20/05/2022 17:42

How does Just for Men work?

Echosound · 20/05/2022 17:49

Nothing will colour grey hair whilst leaving the rest alone

Qwill · 20/05/2022 18:21

I use wella illuminia mixed with the pastel developer. Only needs 10mins and doesn’t lift my natural colour, but I’m blonde, so not sure what it would be like on dark hair.

cottagegardenflower · 20/05/2022 18:42

It colours all hair colours the same. Men always have dark hair with the grey, or are going bald. Just choose a colourant that is your natural colour and colour it all.

How does Just for Men work?

Most permanent hair colours use a mixture of bleach to strip the original colour from the hair and dye to make your hair the chosen colour. Just for Men skips the bleaching stage, so the only hairs that pick up the colour are those which have no colour i.e. greys. I’d buy it if it wasn’t tested on animals. I’m looking for an ethical alternative for women.

If there's no bleach, is Just for Men permanent?

sorry OP but now I'm interested in this product!

Gymnopedie · 20/05/2022 20:29

Naturtint is cruelty free (you need to get right down to the bottom of the page to read that bit).

My hair is naturally auburn/chestnut and I've never dyed it. I'm 60+ and somehow still have almost all my own colour. My plan when I eventually want to cover the grey is to use a box dye in a copper colour, the (my!) theory being that it will change the grey, but make very little difference to the rest of it.

To give you all a chuckle, I had a friend who was involved with a particular type of horse riding. His best horse at the time (RIP Hawfy) was a black stallion who had a few white hairs here and there. He used to get the Just for Men treatment to retain his youthful looks. Smile

theemmadilemma · 20/05/2022 21:54

Op, I've been desperate for a product like this, I don't understand how it doesn't exist. I fully expect science to find a way!!! 😂

I want something to colour my greys a more blond colour without bleach so it doesn't touch the rest!

NoToLandfill · 20/05/2022 22:16

This does exactly what you need

Leganza leave in colour conditioner. I leave in for an hour, rinse out. The colour stays. And doesn't wash off. Obviously have to wear gloves. No idea why it's not more well known

Interesting! Does it cover the roots?

iknowthismuchis · 20/05/2022 22:40

I used to use that root dye - so just popped some on my grey hairs then washed it off after 10 mins

Just because it has no bleach it doesn’t mean that the hair that still has colour doesn’t pick up the dye. If there’s enough pigment in a product to colour grey, then it will colour the rest as well

NoToLandfill · 21/05/2022 00:31

Yes it covers roots.

Deux · 21/05/2022 00:45

I don’t know if this is any help. I’ve got very little grey, maybe a few %) and my hairdresser uses a salon product that is actually marketed for men on my hair. I’m not sure why it’s called. It’s brilliant.

He paints it on with a brush in the obvious areas and then sort of smooshes it down the lengths. My natural colour doesn’t take on much of this colour at all but the greys are covered. It’s not a flat result at all and you can see all the natural colour variation in my hair. My hair is very dark brown.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 21/05/2022 03:49

Not sure if there is such a thing, I use Naturtint from the health shop as it has less chemicals and does not leave my scalp dry.. I will be doing it this weekend and will do the roots and leave for a bit and then mix through the ends. Leaves my hair lovely and shiny. Have very dark hair.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 21/05/2022 03:49

maybe cover the hair you do not want coloured in tin foil and then be easier to target the greys..

brokengoalposts · 21/05/2022 03:59

My dh thought that JFM targeted only the grey so he used some on his beard, as his hair is dark but his beard is very grey, this made it look like he dyed his hair, which he doesn't do, it's just naturally dark even though he's 50. OMG we have never laughed so much in years, we had tears rolling down our faces, he ended up shaving it off.

Monty27 · 21/05/2022 04:06

OP just put semi permanent colours in and let the sunshine do the rest. I've gone au naturel. Don't dye it 😳

mathanxiety · 21/05/2022 05:11

I use a Garnier chestnut brown just on my roots all around my head, tying up the ends for the development time, then rinsing out as directed. The effect is a sort of ombre that looks very natural, sort of sun-lightened on the ends. My hair is long and thick and I'd have to use two boxes of dye if I were to colour it all the way to the ends.
