Work Wardrobe

After working from home since lockdown (and living in my PJs) I'm moving into a role that requires me to be in the office full time and as such, could do with updating my work wardrobe with a few key pieces.

The dress code is smart casual (I hate this term, it's too wide!!) but figure I need smart trousers, a few tops and some jackets or cardigans.

I don't have a huge budget. I'm 5ft, size 16.

I'm moving into an office with a few people who really overdress up for the office and while I don't intend to do that, I don't want to be the shabbiest one there.

Any suggestions?

Also, shoes would be good. Looking for something comfy and either flat or very small / wedge heel. Something I could walk around all day in and still feel like I'm walking on a cloud come 5pm. Slippers?!??

Can you wear smart trainers? Lots of people in my office do. I often wear my Allbirds which are really comfy. I get most of my clothes from M&S (ordering online) there are lots of comfortable work trousers in black and navy. You could probably get away with getting some cheap tees in a few colours, some cardigans or blazers to mix and match and a couple of pairs of trousers.

Look on eBay for boden Richmond trousers in your size ( they have size charts on boden website). Also look for similar shirts and tops and a cardigan or jacket that can go with most things. I would start with one pair of neutral trousers ( black or navy) 2 x shirts, 1 x long sleeve tee and a card or jacket. Maybe add in a dress or a skirt.
for shoes, try M&S for flats or low heel.

I´d get shoes with cushioned insoles.
Maybe try Hush Puppies, for example. www.hushpuppies.co.uk/collections/womens-smart-shoes-1

I agree with one or two pairs or neutral trousers. As Summer is approaching, I´d get a darker and a lighter pair.
Ensure that you get tops that can match both trousers (or skirts if you prefer) and jackets that match all of them too. This way, you can mix and match easily without seeming to wear the same clothes all the time.
Maybe add the occasional scarf for some colour or a striking necklace that can change an outfit.

I wear chinos with a blouse. I get most blouses from Esprit or shirts from Benetton. In winter I wear black skirts and again blouses from Esprit mostly.
