Scale and polish - how much is a hygienist vs dentist?

My dentist does S&P - she is a one man band so do this as part of check up. Wondering if I can save money finding a hygienist elsewhere? Do they only ever work out of dental practice - so would you have to have a registered dentist there?

You are lucky. I pay to see the dentist, then pay another £25 for a S&P.

My private hygienist is £60 but very thorough compared with my husband's quick NHS version recently!

My hygienist is so expensive - £115 but I save a bit with a dental plan , but so much better than when my previous dentist used to do it. He did a quick scrape round in about 5 minutes, whereas I now get a full 45 minutes and she is so thorough and it includes airflow which love.

Private hygienist in my dentists is £60 for half an hour for a scale and polish and it's worth every penny. I spent a long time avoiding the dentists, as a result I had to have a fair bit of work done. So I find the money for the hygienist. I suppose it depends on how much of a clean you need, if your cleaning routine is good, a quick scale and polish by the dentists is fine.

Mine charges £130 for the check up and S&P …. Def not 45 mins of S&P as PP suggests - more like 10?

No problem paying private hygienist for work. Are they easy to find or do you have to be part of that dental practice?

A lot of hygienists are ‘direct access’ and you can see them without seeing the dentist first.

My last appointment was ten minutes. I floss every day and use a tongue scraper. Hygienist has said I can go every 9 months instead of every 6.
