Heels or no heels?

I won't be so short, legs look less chunky but.... is it worth it?
Not worn heels in over two years. Are they in? Out? If you're going out and dressing up, yay or nay?

(smart jeans and a nice top)

I wear them. I have no clue as to whether they are in or out.

mistermagpie · 18/05/2022 17:06

I think they are out. They look pretty naff now, even on a night out. People tend to wear dresses and trainers or flat ankle boots, even ballet flats look more modern than a pair of heels to me.

nearlyspringyay · 18/05/2022 17:07

Out but if you like them, wear them!

picassobride · 18/05/2022 17:08

In in every shape and form. Peruse Vogue or Fashion Week in Paris, Milan etc.

Seedoftime · 18/05/2022 17:24

That's a little out of my league 😂I'm wondering what the general public are doing!
Trainers are too causal, I've got ankle boots but it maybe a bit warm for boots. I've some canvas lace up shoes?

@nearlyspringyay I'm really not sure I can be bothered to deal with the pain! Even if it will mean I'm the shortest in the room.

Totally in. Platforms are the way to go. I thought I was done with heels but now I wear them all the time and I'm totally having a renaissance.

PollyIndia · 18/05/2022 19:09

Platforms are also very easy to walk in!

Akite · 18/05/2022 19:18

I haven't worn heels for probably 15 years. Realised quite how daft it was to intentionally hobble yourself. It's great, I don't ever have sore feet from heels now!
Depending on the event and outfit I'd wear nice flats, brogues, trainers or ankle boots.
does it matter if you are the shortest in the room? Someone has to be!

Smartsub · 18/05/2022 19:19

To my eyes they look really dated now, almost like fancy dress of another time.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 18/05/2022 19:21

Totally depends on the heels. Nude courts - out. Chunky platforms - in

TheOGCCL · 18/05/2022 19:30

I think it's either very high heels or no heels, anything in between is a bit out of fashion.

Charley50 · 18/05/2022 19:50

I think they look naff and dated now. Unless you can walk very elegantly in them or are just sitting and looking fabulous somewhere maybe. Flats and trainers all the way.
Best just to accept your height. Can't be arsed with being uncomfortable.

lolachic · 18/05/2022 21:09

Studies have shown men to be more chivalrous when wearing heels and I've definitely found it to be the case (holding doors etc)
Depends on the setting but I feel taller and more confident in them and I think they can offer a touch of elegance to some outfits.
But I always carry a pair of flats just in case.

itsnotmeitsu · 18/05/2022 22:20

I've noticed that chunky boots and trainers seem to be very much the norm with females of all ages these days. I have about nine pairs of Doc Martens, and two of those pairs have a thick sole with a chunky heel of over three inches. They add this amount to my height (I'm pretty short), whilst only making my instep bend about half-an-inch. I used to only wear heels but now I avoid the stiletto type like the plague. (Full disclosure; I'd probably not be able to walk in them now, anyway.)

I live in a city that has a horse-racing course. Our local is opposite the course. When the races are on and the race-goers flood into the pub most of the younger women are dressed as if they're going to a club or a hen-do. Even if it's a rainy day (which it more often than not is) they'll be wearing stilettos. The look seems so dated and as if it's designed to appeal to men who, when the races are on, actually couldn't give a shit. Last year, when one of the well-known races was on, there was a women in the pub who was probably in her late 40s. She was wearing a purple lace shortish dress (she had the figure for it), and chunky Doc Marten flatform brown sandals. I knew she was going to the races and thought she looked great - dressed up but for herself, not for anyone else. I now own that same pair of sandals 😀

thistimelastweek · 18/05/2022 22:26

I recently wore heels for the first time in years.
I couldn't walk properly and they hurt like fuck.
It couldn't have been a good look.

I hope that "chivalrous" comment is some type of ironic statement because you realise how inaneĺ it is?

I wear whatever footwear I feel comfortable in and if some man is only going to hold a door open for me because I'm wearing stilettos he can fuckety fuck right off 🙄

Uncomfortable high heels are akin to modern foot binding and personally I always feel more confident when my feet are comfortable and not being forced into constrictive shoes. I don't need heels to make me feel good about myself.

If I need anything "dressy" I have a pair of flat Jimmy Choo metallic sandals and a couple of pairs of Russell and Bromley sandals that are stylish and modern. Heels make an outfit
dated.

IheartJKRowling · 19/05/2022 02:33

Inanel? Inane!

oh now I have serious shoe envy. I've seen a pair I love and look comfy but you have to pay for them 😩
I do have a pair of chunky boots from way back when before I was pregnant and my feet increased.

@OC... kitten heel is very much in. Again.

LetitiaLeghorn · 19/05/2022 11:01

I wear trainers and loafers for day to day but for going out, definitely heels. There's nothing about me that doesn't improve when wearing heels. And they're definitely on their way back - all the designers say so.

picassobride · 20/05/2022 09:08

@Iheart... , it could be said that getting stuck to what one feels comfortable in is going to look dated sooner or later.
Wear what you want and look/ feel good in, but declaring something'dated' just because you don't like it is slightly daft.
If you want to know what is in the cards for the next season, look up the be-all-end-all fashion-makers, I mean the high-end fashion houses et al, not some shiny contoured influencers or High Street.

I happens quite often on MN though, and not just in S&B.
