Post-baby hair regrowth (baby hairs) frizzy and wild. Keratin / Brazilian blowdry?

Hi

I had a baby 15 months ago and I lost a lot of hair at 4 months post-partum. It's all grown back particularly around the hair line around my face, ears and at the nape of my neck and is between 2 and 4 inches long.

It is wild and frizzy and not the same texture as the rest of my hair. It is quite short to straighten every day and once it gets wet/sweaty goes wild again.

If I wear my hair up it looks so messy and it's really getting me down. No amount of hairspray keeps it tamed.

I was wondering if a keratin blow dry would help? Can they work with hair so short? How long would it last? Any other solutions?

Coming into summer I just feel like I'm going to have wild hair that's all over the place and I'm ready to treat myself to make it look better.

I would go to a salon that does this and talk it through with them. I had it done the other week and it really didn’t do much to my hair at all (which doesn’t sound like yours, but I’m just saying I wish I’d done a consultation first). They should be able to confirm whether it will do what you want it to.

I can't answer your q about the blow dry , but am posting to say that my hair was dry and frizzy after I had my last child too.

The solution for me was to start using different products. I now use maui moisture shampoo and conditioner and also a drop of hair oil after washing. I stopped using heat too and now am strict about having regular trims.

My hair is never going to be the same as it was before but it has improved so much with careful handling.

I tried taming mine with hairspray too btw. I didn't realise , but was making it worse as it's so drying.

Thank you. What did it do to your hair? Did you have a particular brand of product? I need to do some research and go see a reputable salon I think.

That’s a good point I’m still using the same shampoo. Maybe I need to get some deep conditioning treatments or something if the hair is really dehydrated. It’s so much coarser than the rest of my hair. Hormones are so weird.

I would treat this new baby hair very gently. Get some shampoo and hair masks, take a Biotin supplement or any hair & nail vitamins. Experiment with some hair dos - maybe try some cute headbands, get little clips etc. Also very important is a good quality hair brush.

@SunSparkle deep conditioning is a great idea. Get some moisture in there!

It's indeed really frustrating what pregnancy does to your hair , it puts your body through so much.

Maybe you could lay your edges? You could use a baby-hair brush (cantu do a good one) or an unused toothbrush and use either gel or oil to slick down the baby hairs. There are lots of guides online such as youtube if you google 'how to lay my edges'.

For the love of god don’t pay a salon for a Brazilian blow dry when you can do the exact same thing at home for a tenner.

I had kerastraight and it did nothing. My hair was actually worse because the sulphate free shampoo doesn’t suit my hair. I’ve got around it by making a lot more effort to style my hair, which is annoying because I thought the treatment was meant to make your hair easier to style. But at the end of the day it was a very expensive mistake for me.

I am also post partum (only 4 months) and I wondered if that had an effect. As you say, hormones are weird!

They are a bit too long now. All the regrowth is about 2-4 inches. I try to smooth it with product and a fine brush but it just becomes flyaway so quickly. I might just have to wait for it to fully grow out.

How do you do it at home?

Sorry, you weren't quoting me, but I've had in salon treatment at £180 and also home treatment for circa £25 for a pot which lasts a about 2/3 treatments. The at home is just as good as the salon, but you need a non GHD brand of hairstraighteners as GHD dont get to a high enough temperature to complete the treatment. I use Brazillian Straight from Amazon, I prefer the Cocochoco kit for results but the treatment fumes burns my eyes, there's not a huge difference in result, Cocochoco gives more shine I think.
