Fine hair care advice

My 9yo DD has mid length, very fine and blowaway hair. It often looks greasy after 2 days, sometimes we can stretch it to 3 but it makes me twitchy!!

I have quite coarse, very short hair so I'm not really aufait on the best shampoos etc for her. Up until now we have used child's farm products (which were ok-ish) but she'd like something a bit less kiddy now.

Can anyone reccomend any particular shampoos or ways of washing and care which may help with above issues?

You want a shampoo that’s as light as possible. I think you might need to look for sulphate free. I’d recommend Faith in Nature’s avocado shampoo.

Thankyou Polly. Would you reccomend the conditioner too?

I’ve not used the conditioner. I use a head and shoulders one as hairdresser said it was light. Seems to work ok, hair is manageable and doesn’t get too greasy too quickly. My hairdresser also said one of the main reasons for hair that gets too greasy is not washing shampoo out thoroughly. She said it was surprisingly common for people to think they had but really not. So rinse for longer than you think she needs.

Faith in Nature also do a rosemary shampoo and conditioner which is formulated for greasy hair, which I can recommend.

DelurkingAJ · 15/05/2022 10:45

My hair is described by my hairdresser as ‘so fine it’s flyaway’. I need to wash it at least ever other day or it becomes flat, limp and greasy. Unless you go for a salon brand then the trick, for me, has been to use something very plain and boring but very regularly. When my hair was long I would just condition the ends.

I have similar hair and shampoos that work are the Love+Planet one, Faith in Nature lavender, Garner Hair Food one for fine hair, the loreal dark teal bottle one and the Head and Shoulders 'Volume' one which you may need to buy online now.
Don't go for anything too stripping as it will make things worse. I wouldn't bother with conditioner, or use a tiny amount of a silicone- free leave-in.

The love + planet one for fine hair

I'm following because I have the same hair type and haven't found a solution yet!

This is what works for me and it may also work for your 9 year old daughter too.

I still have baby hair! Its finer than fine and drives me crazy.

I wash it with a casteel soap which I buy online, ( from a very well known online company) its a very gentle soap and does not weigh the hair down and is also easy to rinse out.

I then spray a mixture of vinegar and water on it before using mouse then a leave in conditioner spray, which is marketed for kids! Great stuff works a treat and has stopped me getting head sore.

The vinegar and water spray is 1 tbsp to 150mls of water.

The mouse and the vinegar and water spray help to reduce the greasy hair which I have also had since the age if 9.

Hope this helps!

Watching with interest as I have long but fine flyaway hair.

For those recommending Garnier is it the Watermelon or Oat ?

Bobbybobbins · 15/05/2022 15:29

I have fine flyaway hair that is also dry and find Herbal Essences range good as it is light but also moisturising.

LittleFriendSusan · 15/05/2022 15:49

Also the same here. I find whatever I use I have to switch it up every few months, but recently I've had success with the Aveeno cider vinegar one (in the yellow bottle).

Previously cheap & cheerful Alberto Balsam in apple, Herbal Essences grapefruit & mint & strawberry & mint were all ok. The L'Oréal clay one was great for my hair but my scalp didn't like it ☹️. Herbal Essences bamboo made my hair very greasy & texture was awful.

Faith in Nature grapefruit & orange & wild rose both good and smelt fab!

Garnier Watermelon one #bealola

bassackwards · 15/05/2022 16:09

This is my hair! I'd recommend keeping it cut short, use a light shampoo, no conditioner.

Notbluepeter · 15/05/2022 16:12

I have the exact hair type. After having a scalp assessment and learning so much about my scalp type, the consultant recommended the La Biosthétique oily scalp range - Shampooing Lipokérine A (wash twice) combined with the Lotion Hydrotoxa daily. I cannot state enough how much this has changed my life.

Thankyou all for your advice, off to look at all the options 😊
