How to get rid of shampoo residue on my scalp?

Just that really? I use a purple shampoo and can scratch my head days after I shampoo and underneath my nails will be all purple. I have long thick hair and use quite a high pressure shower to rinse for a couple minutes, but I still can't get rid of the buildup on my scalp. I've washed my hair earlier today and shortly after was fiddling with mg hair and scratched my scalp again and there was loads of moist shampoo buildup still on it. Without using my razor sharp nails and feeling like I'm cutting my scalp every time I scrub, btw can I get rid of the buildup?

You can get like a scalp brush thing on Amazon. It helps with dry scalp too.

For example

Thanks. I'll give that a try. I did have something similar to that years ago but the 'teeth' were thinner and not flexible so it kind of hurt. I also found it got stuck in my long hair and tangled it up. Will give that one a try though

Try switching to a scalp friendly shampoo and just use the purple one once a week.
Your scalp shouldn't be moist at all. Is it itchy?

Wash your hair with washing up liquid.

Sounds bonkers but it works.

This or Boots do a clarifying shampoo

my mother can't quite manage to reach her scalp anymore.
she uses a big soft brush (from the pet shop). lather's up the brush and combs the soapy brush through.

Second vote for the boots clarifying shampoo! It's amazing

This, or I use radox shower gel when I have a build up (not the creamy ones, the fruity ones).

I use this brush - a cheaper version I used to have didn't last long. It takes all the scaliness off my scalp.

Baking soda massaged into wet scalp.

I only wash my hair once a week. And it was only moist because I'd not blow dried it yet

Thanks. I will try the boots clarifying shampoo. I used to use the Neutrogena one, but ran out about a year ago and totally forgot about it. Still won't help prevent the initial problem though, so I will try one of those scalp brushes too

I got this, which seems to work.

I used a M&S shampoo and it left a residue on my hair. It was horrible. I ended up binning it. I’ve now gone over to Head and Shoulders for coloured hair and I’m back to normal. No shampoo should leave a residue. I would always wash my hair more than once a week though. I like Aussie shampoo too.

HighInTheHills · 12/05/2022 21:46

I've been suffering from this same problem for ages too OP and it's driven me nuts that my scalp never felt properly clean. Have just been and washed my hair with washing up liquid and used conditioner on the lengths as normal and it's only bloody worked!!!

There's no residue at all under my fingernails if I run them across my scalp, it feels properly clean for the first time in I don't know how long.

Thank you so much to those who recommended washing up liquid, how often do you reckon I should do this? Once every couple of weeks? I guess it's an element of trial and error but I genuinely can't believe the difference tonight!

Sidge · 12/05/2022 22:19

@HighInTheHills I do it every 10 days or so. I don’t use products on my hair but since being menopausal a lot of shampoos and conditioners seem to leave my hair really “claggy”. Stuff that used to leave my hair soft and shiny now leaves it dull and feeling awful.

I started using the Fairy every 10 days or so, as well as using just very basic shampoo and conditioner. My hair is back to being soft and shiny and just feels clean now.

HighInTheHills · 12/05/2022 23:22

@Sidge thank you - that's a new part of my routine now. My hair feels really lovely now it's dried - def a game changer!

Swonderful · 13/05/2022 09:40

Paul Mitchell no 1 is good. Is clarifying but not drying.
