Outfit for drinks for a frumpy mum in 40s

I feel so frumpy and dated. I have drinks with some lovely mums from school. What can I wear for cocktails? I have a long torso, size 12-14, not the best legs but quite curvy. I'd like something with a plunge neck and stylish. Any suggestions? Are jeans and a nice top dated?!?! I'd love a skirt or dress but would it work in all weathers?!
Thanks in advance.

Wrap dress?

Or jeans and a nice top is also fine

Jeans and a nice top still worn round here, maybe heels if going for cocktails?

Jumpsuit could be nice though.

Jeans and a nice top are definitely not dated! (It’s my absolute go to for a drinks/going out outfit)

How tall are you? I’m tall and always like high waisted trousers or culottes with a plunge top for a drinks date.

I always try to do plain clothing, (black jeans and black top, blue jeans and white top) with a pop of colour for accessories. Bags/shoes/blazer in a pink/red/blue etc.

I'm 5'6" and always wear skinny jeans

When you say 'stylish' do you mean dressy / heels type thing? You sound very similar in size and shape to me. What's your budget?

I can't find anything I like myself in terms if colour / print, and they might not be smart enough for you, but these shapes would suit my / our body shape

Jeans are fine. Or cropped leather trousers and plunging silky blouse or oversized shirt or vest depending on weather. I'd prob wear heeled ankle boots with this but depends on the weather. Otherwise chunky sandals. I wouldn't wear any of those dresses for drinks, but that's just not my thing.

You haven’t given a budget.

Or clarified whether the drinks are happening at a pub or a smart cocktail bar.

Or whether your group of friends is particularly style conscious, or not!

A silk jumpsuit would be fairly adaptable …

TottersBlankly · 14/05/2022 11:53

Low budget, would give the effect of a jumpsuit if you bought both parts, but easier to fit.

It will be stylish cocktail bars and yes very stylish group of mums but I want to do it for me, not them. Feel frumpy! I'm liking these long sleeved maxi dresses but I feel too covered up and like a sack of potatoes. Budget ideally under £60

I avoid any dress with any type of elastic or tie or shirring. They all make me look awful. Also any of these tent style dresses. Essentially, most of the dresses around at the moment.

I need a proper waist or a waist made by the cut of the fabric. This is probably too daytime but the shape would suit me

I@carrottopper

I think you need to embrace the look of dresses this summer. There are some very pretty ones and you won’t look frumpy!!
Looking frumpy would be wearing work wear. Also a bit covered up is not a bad thing! You won’t want to look like you are on a hen night.

M&S has a big selection and embraces other ranges now. Mint Velvet is worth a look but more expensive. However you would get more wear out of it.

I think jeans and a top is dated at the moment. So many women wear dresses and sneakers as an alternative!
