Micro needling - anyone had it done?

I've signed up for a course but I'm getting a bit of cold feet, mainly because I am out and about quite a lot and I'm worried about redness.
Has anyone had it done?

I had it done once. It was exceptionally painful. I wasn’t given any numbing cream she just went straight to it. Very red but clear within 24 hours. Skin looked good afterwards but not better than a good quality facial. I would never do it again because of the pain.

Cheeseontoast32 · 09/05/2022 22:06

I've had it done before. The pen wasn't too bad, slightly more pressure on thinner areas of skin like the forehead though.
If they use the non-electric one, the derma roller i think it's called, that was much more painful. It looked like some sort of medieval torture device, like having a ball with large spikes dragged across your face.
Luckily I don't think they tend to use it as much now.
The redness was only mild for me, like a slight sunburn. Went after 2 days.
I was told to expect dry and slightly peeling skin afterwards, which I had. More annoyingly, my skin broke out too.
Told to expect to see a difference after 3/4 weeks, so I've got another week to wait.
Hopefully it'll be worth it!

I've had it done and it all depends on how deeply it is done.

If it's only superficial your skin will be a bit red but should be fine the next day. If you are having a deeper treatment it will be a few days before the redness goes but it is easy to cover with mineral powder make up but you shouldn't use foundation for the first 48 hours after treatment.

I did find it made my skin flake and peel after a few days so be ready for that.

It did make a noticeable difference though, especially to the skin on my chest where it help with the texture and wrinkles.

This was me same day and a couple of days after with light make up and I have to say my skin did look good. Glowing. I’m mid 50s.

Looks fab now, great results!
I've had it done. Started with smaller needles then built up to longer ones. It hurts a bit but not unbearably painful.

NoToLandfill · 09/05/2022 22:33

Why on earth would your therapist not use emla cream to numb the skin? That is barbaric

Kaftankween · 09/05/2022 22:42

@NoToLandfill i don’t know. I wasn’t sure what to expect and didn’t know enough to query it. I do now and wouldn’t have it done again, at least in that salon. It’s a couple of months ago. I might email the salon and raise it actually.

Kaftankween · 09/05/2022 22:58

To clarify. First pic is me immediately following micro needling, as you were asking about redness @Florence4170

Florence4170 · 09/05/2022 23:11

Thanks so much, I think I've read that she uses numbing cream but I'll check. Before and after photos are great! You can see a difference. My appt is 11.30 and I'm going out at about 7. I don't mind not wearing foundation but I don't want to be red and flaky! I don't mind that if I'm just knocking around the house, but if I'm going out I want to look ok.

You can buy emla cream at the pharmacy. It's hidden away. Takes 30 minutes to kick in. Can't feel a thing. No idea why it's not used more often. Don't understand why not.

PeachMelba78 · 10/05/2022 19:07

I’ve had it done, I wouldn’t go out same night as I was red for a good 20 hours afterwards. I really like it, numbing cream is essential!

Florence4170 · 14/06/2022 08:55

Just a quick update in case anyone fancies having it done. No numbing cream but I really haven't needed it. If I remember I take a couple of ibuprofen beforehand. I've had 4 treatments so far, or maybe 5. It's fine, not the most pleasant of experiences but not uncomfortable. I don't feel it has made a great deal of difference though 🥲.

Someone suggested years ago when I bought a miracle cream that it didn't make much difference because my skin wasn't that bad and I've always used moisturiser. Maybe that's it!

The cost for 6 treatments was £485 (East Midlands, I imagine the cost will vary quite a lot. Proper salon, proper machines etc. The idea is that you have your course of 6 then go to one a month. I think I'll probably continue.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed upthread.

I'm booked in for this on Saturday but having read these reviews I'm not sure now! Don't really fancy the pain. At the consultation last week the therapist said she didn't use Emla as it wasn't necessary as she uses a pen. Might stick to microdermabrasion, but I know that won't have the same "anticipated" effect.

ArabeI · 14/06/2022 10:39

I asked a beautician about this and apparently monthly or 6 weekly is recommended. Sunburn type redness for a couple of days afterwards.

I'm really unsure about the 'science' behind it and if there are any real benefits. I've wavered, and even thought about a home kit, but I'm not sure that's as effective and you need to sterilise the needles with alcohol I think.

Watching this thread with interest.

ArabeI · 14/06/2022 10:41

The redness, and hiding it for a couple of days, worries me too @Florence4170

Florence4170 · 14/06/2022 10:43

I should have said - very little redness. I have gone out on the same evening. I don't wear much foundation nowadays but have done. She said after 4 hours the pores close anyway. Definitely not a concern after a few hours, for me, anyway

Apparently it's all about "traumatising" the collagen!

IRememberXanadu · 14/06/2022 17:14

I bought a derma roller on Amazon, 0.5mm one. I only just started using it regularly, i.e. every other day. I can't say I've seen any results so far but then again, I have fairly good skin to start with. I will continue and see how it goes. I also dermaplane at home.
