Drinking water

I keep seeing references on here and elsewhere to how drinking lots of water is really beneficial to your appearance. I really struggle to drink enough at the best of times - every year I make the resolution that I'll drink more water and I fail every time. I think I need some pep talks in the shape of positive stories about how you drank a load of water and veritably transformed 😉or at least to understand a bit more about the benefits as people have actually experienced them. Also, erm, does squash count? I have to admit I find water quite dull.

Just be aware it is possible to drink too much water. If your wee is clear stop drinking. It doesn't have to be water , squash, tea and coffee also count as there's not enough caffeine to wipe out the liquid.

The thing that helped me was buying on of those huge 1.5 litre water bottles and making it a goal to finish it by a certain time. I’m a competitive person, even if it’s with myself 😂

Yes you'll just per a lot

The idea that drinking excessive water is good for you is a myth, on an average day, you need 2 litres but that includes all liquids such as that in food, fruit, juices, tea, soup etc

It is sensible to drink a glass of water when you are thirsty

But chugging down 2 litres a day will just make you pee all the time

Your body will tell you when you're thirsty

Best advice is to keep a bottle with you at all times. That way, you can sip on it throughout the day.

I've been drinking loads of water since my teen years and I'm 30 now. My bottle rarely leaves my side. On the odd occasion where I've left it elsewhere, I do get lazy and don't drink, hence why it's so important that it is always within reach.

It's so good for your skin. When I'm ill, my skin always looks immaculate as I'm drinking even more water than usual haha.

It's just something you will get used to. Once you see the benefits in your own skin/body, I am sure that will be motivation enough to continue on.

I bought a glass bottle with markings on the side, so 9am, 10am etc. I prefer the taste of water when it’s in a glass bottle, and get put off from the taint that plastic bottles sometimes get. (Aware I’m overly fussy in that respect!). The combination of visible reminder and my preferred taste works well for me.

I found the more I drank the more I wanted. If I didn't drink constantly all day, it would be about 2L per day from big bottles I bought on the way into work, then I would feel tired and thirsty, which is already a sign of dehydration.

I don't see how water could not be important, it's essential. It "clears out your system" for want of a better term.

I drink it to stay alert and flush out toxins via your kidneys. Your kidneys cannot do their job without water.

What is excessive though?

Thirst is your body telling you that you are already dehydrated. What is the benefit of waiting until you are dehydrated to drink?

What happens if your wee is clear and you carry on drinking?

I've been doing this for 7 years now.

What have I done to myself? When will I begin to see effects?

BreezeofGreen · 10/05/2022 14:11

I only drink water if I keep a bottle in the fridge and drink from that so I can see how much I've had and how much I still need to drink. If I rely on a glass, I never drink enough.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 10/05/2022 18:53

I hate cold water and drink hot water instead.
TBH though I also drink a ton of decaf coffee, and I really don’t see how it would be that much less hydrating.

PinotPony · 11/05/2022 20:32

I've upped my water game recently on advice from my PT. I find cold water is best so I have a 500ml thermos bottle. One bottle when I wake up, one at the gym, one before each meal and one at bed time.

In the evening I drink San Pellegrino instead of my usual g&t!

Interesting video by this dermatologist. She explains that drinking loads of water isn't really linked to skin moisture.
