Can I wear these boots to an interview?

I've got an interview for a senior level job this week, more senior than I'd have expected to be shortlisted for. I am going shopping tonight for an outfit, likely a black or navy office-appropriate dress. But footwear always stumps me! I don't want to wear heels, and I wear patent doc martens to my current job when I'm in.

Are these OK for an interview or do I need to grow up? www.schuh.co.uk/womens/blowfish-malibu-rauly-croc-vegan-black-boots/1439707060/?utm_source=social_dr&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=dr_aq1_daba_cbo_abid&utm_content=23846594777270643_121220&fbclid=IwAR1-BF8l2Th4_iez6-W0c_h1FCeUT1oQLnFw8Wle1cj6iV1Kk7JFlnhV6zQ

Ahh sorry, nightmare posting links from a phone. Last try before I ask for this to be removed: Hopefully, a link to the shoes!

Links still busted - sorry.

I always suggest this, but chunky-soled loafers are a good choice right now. Plainish ankle boots would also work well.

(I'm on my way to an interview right now wearing a blazer, smart trousers.. and high tops. I don't wear heels for nobody any more.)

Imo no. Fine if the office dress code generally permits them as work shoes, but I don't think they are interview suitable.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 09/05/2022 15:24

Right, seen the boots.

I think those would be OK for interview as long as the dress is plain and you keep everything else professional and pared-back, as long as you're not interviewing at e.g. a law firm or other conservative environment. So much depends on the culture of where you're interviewing.

mupten426132 · 09/05/2022 15:50

I don’t think they look smart enough for an interview sorry!

purplecorkheart · 09/05/2022 15:52

I don't think they are suitable for a interview.

Knittedfairies · 09/05/2022 15:54

It depends what the job is, I think.

AhNowTed · 09/05/2022 15:54

No definitely not.

SergeiL · 09/05/2022 15:55

Well it depends on the hiring manager. I have interviewed loads of people and I don’t recall ever looking at someone’s shoes. It also depends on the organisation. Where I work (huge company) they would be fine. The other thing to think about is - do you really want to work for a person or company that makes decisions based on peoples footwear and do you want to be able to express your style at work. So on balance I would wear them, and if they go against you, the small minded hirer or company have missed out.

ProseccoStorm · 09/05/2022 15:57

Unless it's in a very creative or relaxed industry I'd say those boots are inappropriate for an interview.

Can you Google the company to see what people are wearing from pics on social media and LinkedIn etc?

Plain black ankle boots fine, or loafers, or brogues, or pointed flats (I bought a lovely pair from Dune recently)

Good luck with the interview

hepaticanobilis · 09/05/2022 15:58

I think if it was autumn/winter and the boots would feel more weather-appropriate then they'd be ok, but now with temps around 20C (if you're in the UK), they would stand out too much.

I don't think you need to wear high heels at all, I'd probably opt for some kind of black lace-up or loafer style personally.

Iamnotamermaid · 09/05/2022 15:59

Hmm not my first choice of footwear. I would go for plain, smart ankle boots unless you are going for a creative type role.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 09/05/2022 16:04

No, play it safe for the interview and then hopefully you can get the job and wear the boots to work!

Stuckandinamess · 09/05/2022 16:10

No, not suitable for an interview unless it is in a very relaxed casual environment (and then I assume you wouldn't be wearing a black or navy office appropriate dress).

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 09/05/2022 16:25

It's impossible to say for sure without knowing the company/industry/role/geographical area etc. Something that would be great in the marketing dept of a media company in Soho might be hopelessly out of place in an undertakers in Tiverton.

The very fact you are asking this tells me you are aware they won't be appropriate. To use your own phase you need to 'grow up' and accept that your personal style will sometimes clash with the norms of your chosen profession. It might be time to start building a work wardrobe alongside your preferred look. After all, I doubt many barristers choose to wear black robes and white wigs on their days off1

Afterfire · 09/05/2022 16:27

No I don’t think I’d wear those for an interview unless it was some Uber trendy marketing or fashion type thing, even then I’d probably play it safe and just wear some smart shoes or loafers.

Fleur405 · 09/05/2022 16:28

Depends on the culture of the organisation. I’m at law firm and would say definitely not in a professional services firm. You don’t need to wear heels though.

HeadToToesNo · 09/05/2022 16:30

Not suitable for a job interview. Maybe once you've got the job, but not for the initial stages.

NancyJoan · 09/05/2022 16:31

It depends entirely on your industry, but if you were in a creative role, you probably wouldn't be asking.

No need to wear heels, there are plenty of flat shoes to be had.

custardbear · 09/05/2022 16:32

What job and what industry? Will most be covers by trousers or wearing a skirt/dress?

Chewbecca · 09/05/2022 16:34

I wouldn't, just in case the interviewer thinks they are inappropriate.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/05/2022 16:38

If you're looking for a black/navy office appropriate dress, then absolutely not. They are not the footwear to wear with an office dress.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/05/2022 16:39

Are your patent doc martens shoes or boots? The shoes would be smart enough for an interview, boots would not. You might get away with a chelsea boot with a less bulky sole but there won't be many of those in the shops in May. Another vote for a pair of loafers if you want new shoes.
