Women’s short wetsuits/springsuits - only for thin women apparently!

OK, not all of them - vaguely honourable mentions to Finisterre and Neon for offering up to a size 16.

But if you’re a larger/taller gal who likes surfing or cold water swimming but not in a full wetsuit, where do you buy them from? I’ve tried all the major surf brands and nobody seems to go over a 12, occasionally a 14 if you’re lucky. I am definitely a 16. Happy to spend up to £125 for something decent as it’ll get plenty of wear.

I've got a shortie 2 bare feet one in a size 18. It wasn't expensive and does the job - 3mm I think...

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 08/05/2022 09:19

Have you looked at blueseventy?

Their size guide suggests that they cater for taller / larger women.

Decathlon.

dubyalass · 08/05/2022 09:23

Not heard of blueseventy, I'll take a look - thanks!

I'm specifically looking for one that looks like a swimsuit on the bottom but has long sleeves, rather than the'shorty' type where it looks like cycling shorts, if that makes sense?? I'd just like something a bit more attractive than the standard wetsuit style and which will free me up for swimming - the ones with legs can be a bit too buoyant.

They claim this 2mm shorty goes to size 20 for £50!

Or this swimming wet suit for £100 to size 16

Decathlon sizes are often very small, be warned! Wiggle might be worth a look too.

Harridan1981 · 08/05/2022 09:30

I completely agree.

Funnily enough my size 18 recent favourite has been some wetsuit trousers from Decathlon. That sadly a mouse nibbled in the garage this winter so I need to buy more

cherrypiepie · 08/05/2022 09:32

Primark are selling wetsuits this year if you don't need a technical one. Have no clue what they are like b it cheap as chips (ish) and they will have a good size range too.

I'm a 16-18 with a long torso 168 cm and well over 75kg so that blueseventh size chart wouldn't work for me.

I've always been this size and 25 years ago it was impossible to buy anything for women that was bigger than a size 16 (which were generally smaller) in technical outdoor clothing. I would have hoped we would have progressed a bit since then.

I've got a Ripcurl one that's a size 14 and I'm 5'8 fits really well. I'm sure they did a 16 too.

I agree it was a mission to find one in my size though.

Will dig out the one I've got and post the link, only bought it last year.

Invisimamma · 08/05/2022 09:34

I'm size 18/20 and got my shorty wetsuit in decathlon. I got my full wetsuit from regatta and they also do a shorty version. Both were not expensive.

Lomo also cater for almost all sizes.

Invisimamma · 08/05/2022 09:36

Two Bare Feet the largest size didn't quite fit me but I imagine it would be for a size 16. I got this brand for my children and they're great. There are lots of options out there.

cherrypiepie · 08/05/2022 09:37

Sainsburys also have rashsuits I saw in store and a quick look on the website they have wet suits too- no 16 or 18 so either stop at 16 or out of stock.

TheNinthLock · 08/05/2022 09:38

I am size 20 and recently bought a wetsuit from Mountain Warehouse in size 20/22. But they went up to 24/26.

lljkk · 08/05/2022 09:49

OP wants a weird unusual shape wetsuit, that's why she's struggling.

£160 here
£50 from Evans

😁

I am weird, it's true. It's for swimming rather than surfing, so excessive buoyancy is the main issue. I don't mind cold legs but I hate the cold water around my middle/chest/arms, hence something with sleeves.

Great suggestions all, thanks so much. Lots of options where before I thought I had none!

Also have a look at C-Skins, they do this spring suit up to a size 18

EllaPaella · 08/05/2022 13:08

I think the problem is that you generally have to size up at least one, often two sizes anyway for wetsuits. I'm a 10-12 in clothes but my full thickness Roxy wetsuit is a 14 and my neoprene swimming costume is a large and a very snug fit. What a manufacturer says is a larger size is often one or two sizes smaller in reality.
It might be better to go to a proper surf shop and try several on, all the makes are so variable anyway in terms of size. The other place to try is asking of one of the open water swimming facebook groups, they are fantastic for this kind of help.

dubyalass · 08/05/2022 14:20

I've gone with a Neon as she has a 16 in stock and I wanted to take it on holiday this week. Fingers crossed it fits. Although having just been in the water, I was very glad of my full length 3mm Gul!

@EllaPaella your idea of asking open water swimming groups is a really good one - I think I will do that regardless. I'll report back.

OP posts:
dubyalass · 08/05/2022 14:22

My full length is a 16 (my usual size) and it fits perfectly, perhaps a little large around the waist but everywhere else it's spot on. That's a Gul and I think they are generally true to size.
