Talk to me about waxing...

My only experience with waxing is one strip on my leg at 16, lots of tears and a vow to never do it again.

I own a Philips Lumea which I used last year, absolutely loved it, worked wonderfully, but I've left it too late now after stopping it for months. I live in a hot country and we're just getting into shorts weather which will only end at the end of September.

I currently shave, but don't like it because it comes back too quickly and I get razor rash easily.

I'm considering buying some wax strips (please no suggestions for me to go to a professional, it's not viable) and using those, seeing how I get on with it. However, I figure I have to wait a little while for regrowth before being able to do it again? How long does a wax last? Any tips for me?

Little bump from my hairy legs...

In my opinion the waxing strips are a bit rubbish. I don't have particularly hairy legs but the strips tend to just break off the hairs - leaving it a bit stubbly, sore from the wax .

I do have an epilator - which hurts like crazy but is a bit more effective. Mine is quite old perhaps newer models are better.

Waxing strips do not compare with hot wax. Hot wax results are much better.

I’d go with Veet/nair cream
be a lot quicker and pain free

Even if the wax strips work semi-ok, it's much easier to do the front of your legs yourself, than the back. The hairs at the back of your legs grow from side to side, rather than up and down iuswim, so you can't pull the strip off ankle to knee vertically, to go against the direction of hair growth. Easier if you have someone to help, though a lot of faff.

Hm, hadn't thought of that to be honest.

Veet etc seems to last about as long as shaving does, which is super annoying.

I might give the wax strips a go and see how I get on - it's mainly the front of my legs that bugs me as the stubble under the skin is visible, so even freshly shaved it can look like I'm not sometimes, so maybe I'll just wax the front and shave the back, I have fewer issues there. I assume I should exfoliate first and moisturise after?

If you can’t take waxing from a professional you’re going to struggle to do it yourself except in certain areas.

Oh I'm sure I could handle the pain, I've grown up a fair bit since the first time I tried it haha. It's more than my summers are incredibly busy as I work in the tourism industry, so it'll be very difficult to uphold waxing appointments so it's just easier to do something like that myself.

Hot wax is better than strips, I think strips are a bit rubbish.

PermanentlyTired03 · 06/05/2022 15:42

Wax strips are so painful and crap. Hot wax is better- especially by a beautician rather than diy as they are much faster- hurts a lot less

woodhill · 06/05/2022 15:51

Strips are awful

I do use them then go over legs with an epilator afterwards

linerforlife · 06/05/2022 15:52

I would have thought the Lumea was your answer? The hair will grow back slower and if you've used it consistently before it won't take long before you notice a greatly reduced amount (which will reduce need to shave and shaving rash etc). With waxing you have to wait for the hair to grow back to a decent length - not really ideal if it's "shorts season"?

I used it pretty much consistently for a year, then haven't used it for about a year I'd say, thinking about it. My legs are patchy in areas with no hair growth whatsoever - you think it would work faster than the first experience? If so, I might give it a try.. I really assumed I'd left it too late and should've picked it up months ago.

Oops, nice little name change fail there! AbeilleOrange is me too!

Go back to using the Lumea, although I have read that if you don't use it every few months, the battery can deteriorate to the point it doesn't work any more. Fingers crossed yours is still functioning!
Your legs sound like mine, dark hair where you can still see the roots under the skin. I also suffer from strawberry legs. Waxing, epilating helped but was painful, I hated the regrowth stages and epilating especially took too long. The lumea has been an absolute godsend. All those previous issues are now gone, and for the first time in my life my legs don't look like a car crash. I didn't use mine between sept and feb this year, and my regrowth was so much slower, and thinner than it would have been without using it. If you want faster results you could use weekly rather than the recommended two weekly. Good luck! :)

Any tips for removing the wax residue. Those wipes aren't enough usually

I wish it was possible to,buy a bottle of wax remover solution

I used the strips today for face and underarms, underarms wasn't great
