Curly hair

I have very curly hair, it used to be dead straight but has recently changed. How do you brush it without it going frizzy instead of curly ?

You don’t 😬
have a look at the curly girl method!
you can brush your hair soaking wet to detangle, however the worst thing you can do if your trying to stop frizz is brush curly hair dry.
I have extremely curly hair and have been doing CGM for 3 years after 15 years or straightening very thick, coarse, dry unruly hair.

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/05/2022 11:16

Don’t brush curly hair, I use a wide toothed comb when wet to detangle, blob on leave in conditioner and scrunch through a tiny blob of gel and leave it to dry. Once dry scrunch out any crunchy bits left by the gel and I’m left with soft, bouncy curls.

On days when I’m not washing my hair I spritz with water, add a bit of curl creme and leave.

I only brush my hair when I’m straightening it.

I'm glad others have already come in to say it... I was reading your post and shrieking 'OMG DON'T BRUSH IT!'

Fingers only!

megletthesecond · 03/05/2022 11:23

You never brush curly dry hair.

I gently do mine before I wash it and thats it.

MrsJBaptiste · 03/05/2022 13:13

I have ringletty curly hair and have never straightened it - I love having curly hair!

I wash it - shampoo & conditioner - every 4-5 days then brush it when it's wet.
Then stick a load of gel on it, leave it and scrunch it (I know, very 80's!) then finish it off with the hairdryer.

I used to brush it before washing it and could hear the hair splitting with each stroke and the amount of hair on the carpet...😧

Add moisture, work from the bottom using fingers or a a detangling comb/brush, section the hair to work through. SheaMoisture products are said to be good for curly hair but I haven't personally tried them so I can't say for sure.

PradaOnaBudget · 03/05/2022 15:33

You DON'T. Wash it every few days and just comb it with conditioner while wet. After rinsing, but still dripping, apply curling cream. Scrunch up. Then scrunch with a towel without destroying the curls and dry naturally or with a diffuser

PradaOnaBudget · 03/05/2022 15:45

I use Trepadora products as I have my curls cut by them. However I do think that the secret is in the correct application and patience while drying. Most products will work if you apply to very wet hair and patiently wait without touching until the hair is dry. Then you break the cast by scrunching it up

If it goes frizzy on the days after it's been washed, you can calm it down by using a light oil, like Moroccanoil. This gives the curls some shape. I use L'oreal's extraordinary oil, which is much cheaper and works pretty well.

How do people stop it from looking like a mess on non-wash days? Mine dries into nice ringlets but they tend to loosen over time and combing through with my fingers isn’t enough to make it not look like I just rolled out of bed…

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/05/2022 15:09

@Chaoslatte I let my hair get a bit damper in the shower than I normally would, then turn my head upside down, and kind of finger massage it. If there's still wildness in evidence, I like the Percy & Reid Wonder Balm. @Cubangal Don't brush it, unless wet, with conditioner!

I sleep with hair pins in, sticking the curls to my head to keep it staying ringletty. I'm not going to lie, it us uncomfortable but worth it to have nice hair!

Only brush when wet. I don't even do that I just run my fingers through it. I put mine in a pineapple ponytail overnight to protect it and I'm the morning just wet my hands and scrunch into my hair when I've taken it down. It's easy to look after curly hair when you know how.

liveforsummer · 05/05/2022 21:50

Curly dd is 9, she knows brushes are the enemy 😆. We don't even use a comb but some use a wide tooth or wet brush when wet. We finger comb only. Nothing you can brush it with when dry. I spritz with water and run conditioner through with fingers as a replacement to brushing

liveforsummer · 05/05/2022 21:52

Between wash days I mean for the last part - each morning spray water, finger comb with silicone free conditioner and leave to air dry.

Gherkingreen · 05/05/2022 22:03

For my shoulder length curly/wavy hair I wash with Cantu shampoo once a week and otherwise I co-wash. I never brush it, unless I'm putting conditioner through and then might brush with Denman or wide comb.
I squish Umberto Giannini curl jelly into soaking curls and either diffuse gently or air dry, without any touching. Then sometimes finish with UG curl cream.
Non-wash days I water spray then use a bit of gel to refresh the curls.
I've started using Olaplex 3 once a week which isn't CG approved but makes such a massive difference to keeping frizz at bay especially around the front.

GettingStuffed · 06/05/2022 09:53

I'm going against these and say I brush my hair everyday, but I use a tangle teezer rather than a normal brush.

Zazdar · 06/05/2022 10:03

The only time I brush mine is just before I wash it. Otherwise, it’s fingers only.
