What do you wear to work?

I haven't been in an office since July 2020. I have a new job where I'll need to be in the office 2-3 days a week from mid-May. My current wardrobe consists of jeans and t shirts, so I'll be going shopping.

What should I be looking for? I have no clue where to start. I haven't managed to get any ideas from checking out my new colleagues over zoom because they're all men

I'm 40, short, size 10-12, could do with losing a bit of weight but probably won't

Not much help but I wear the same as I do working from home. Jeans and a jumper at this time of year.

CornishGem1975 · 01/05/2022 10:19

I'm in the same position. In the end I emailed my new line manager who said jeans, smart trainers etc were fine.

Office staff at my workplace wear anything from suits to dark denim jeans with smart trainers and top, shirt or polo shirt.

nearlyspringyay · 01/05/2022 10:27

Pre covid my office was corporate, suit and tie for men, suit or skirt for women. Now it's total change, I wore a dress and trainers last week, the men are in jeans and open necked shirts.

JennyForeigner · 01/05/2022 10:44

Toast denim smocks, with leggings and boots in winter. Always smart and not completely boring.

TerrierOrTerror · 01/05/2022 10:53

Similar experience to most others, pre-Covid my office was smart, guys were in suits (but rarely ties). Now they are in smarter jeans or chinos and smart tops or more causal shirts. If there's a particularly important meeting the suits come out.

I tend to have a work uniform of smarter midi length dresses (wrap style from H&M - I have five in various patterns ranging from four years old to recent). Pre pandemic I had a lot more pencil skirts as well, but I now stick to just these dresses and throw on a tailored jacket for important meetings.

I'm SLT in a school so not completely corporate but still need to look smart and professional. I wear tailored trousers and tops. I get quite a lot from Zara, hush, John Lewis and some bits from Fat Face or joules.

Walkingtheplank · 01/05/2022 11:26

I'm in twice a week. In order to not have to think too much about clothing, I generally choose between 2 pairs of smartish trousers and 4 tops. All the tops go with both trousers. Some people where Jean's which I think is too casual. I do where a trainer shoe which I would not have done pre-covid.

ChilledMocha · 01/05/2022 11:43

Black jeans, top is either a jumper or a blouse. Add a blazer if need to look smarter. Shoes normally smart trainers. It's quite laidback in our office.

hepaticanobilis · 01/05/2022 11:46

I've always worn something along the "smart casual" lines. Jersey dresses (usually with a print) that come to the knee, with a cardigan or blazer over it, with tights and flat shoes or boots is my usual go to most of the year. Denim and smarter trainers have also been acceptable at every workplace. Usually people only dress up more if they have external, important meetings.

I would only avoid things that look like obvious sports or "home" wear like joggers or leggings or t-shirts with slogans.

Cotherstone · 01/05/2022 11:58

Our corporate office has definitely embraced smart casual. I, like most women, either wear a dress with decent trainers (so not scuffed running shoes!) or good fitted jeans with a top and maybe a blazer. I tend to dress up my jeans with heeled boots and bought a fantastic rolled sleeve black jacket that makes even a basic T-shirt look smart.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/05/2022 13:56

Since we've gone back to the office it's like casual Friday monday-weds(wfh other two days) so jeans and trainers. I used to wear black skinny jeans and smart tops. And dresses, low heeled shoe boots.

Goldengoosey · 01/05/2022 14:20

Pre-covid I wore smart blouse, wide leg trousers with chunky loafers or brogues. Sandals in the summer. Sometimes short dress over trousers.

Not much different now, apart from wearing Flatform trainers and planning to wear Flatform sandals soon. Even with the exact same clothes, the trainers make it look much more casual. Men who wore suits have ditched their ties. Women who wore heels pre-covid not so much now.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/05/2022 15:54

@Cotherstone would you mind sharing where your jacket is from or recommending one pleaseSmile

MarmiteCoriander · 01/05/2022 16:02

I'm still WFH, so my work clothes are PJ's or T-shirts! I used to get a nice, fitted suit set from M&S- skirt, trousers and jacket which can be mixed and matched with a nice blouse. I've also bought blazers from next in the past. A nice blazer can smarten up any outfit.

OP- If you've never physically been into the office, to see what others are wearing- I'd start a bit smarter the 1st day and reduce the formality if everyone else is in jeans etc.

I found mine brand new in a charity shop (which made my year 😅) but its essentially this one, though I'd probably take the buttons off this www.riverisland.com/p/black-ruched-sleeve-blazer-771931
