Shall I get a fringe?

TR888 · 01/05/2022 08:51

I have a longish face and think a fringe might suit me. However:

  • I'm 50 and I don't see many women my age with fringes.
  • I've got a bit of a wave and quite frizzy hair. When I used to have short hair as a teenager, it looked rubbish around my forehead... but there weren't any hair straighteners around then, I guess.
  • My hair grows very quickly, will I have to be at the hairdresser's every couple of weeks?
  • If I don't like it, I imagine growing it back is a nightmare, right?

Thanks for listening!

I went for this as a just slightly longer than shoulder length. I've got a GHD hot brush, so its tidied but not too straight, but mostly I just blow-dry it all into place. I'm quite lazy, so like the fact that it carries wavy hair without too much styling.

I’m 55 and have had a fringe since I was about 9. I missed the legislation banning fringes in women over 50.Confused

I don’t know if it will suit your hair. You could use straighteners.

A fringe is good for hiding forehead wrinkles and frown lines.

I am an expert in trimming my own fringe in between hair salon visits.

I love me a fringe.

I trim my own fringe between haircuts.

loads of people have fringes of all ages so that’s not an issue.

maybe by a clip in one to see if you like it?

I just blow dry mine straight down.

Very true! I miss my fringe and I don't have enough hair for a proper one now but I say go for it OP!

if it’s good enough for Vogue…

Oooh, I love Monica Belluci's fringe, but she's so beautiful! Mind you, I'm not ugly myself 😉.

Hm. Clíp-on fringes, I didn't know such a thing existed! I'll Google them now.

I've bought a clip-on fringe! What a great idea to try that first and see how it suits me. I'll report back!

God, Monica Belucci is a stunner...

Only get a fringe if you can be arsed with styling it.

I grow mine out for a year or two, then get bored and cut it back in, then remember why I grew it out (I'm lazy and cant be arsed with faffing with it every morning)...and repeat for decades Grin

TR888 · 01/05/2022 13:19

Ms Monroe, you must like the look of it or you wouldn't go back to it!

I can't wait for my fake fringe to arrive to see what it looks like 🙂

I'm 55 and have quite a heavy fringe - the trick it to brush it one way then the other quite quickly with the hairdryer on it - it can't decide which way it's supposed to go & just hangs straight.
Lasts more than a day & doesn't require straighteners!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/05/2022 15:04

Fringes work best on people with heavy straight hair. My hair is fine so likes to waft about and just doesn't give the same effect.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/05/2022 15:06

I have always had a fringe and I am 59. Most of my friends have fringes too. My hair or very straight and just looks better with a fringe. I tried one of those sloping ones recently but I just looked like a throwback from the 80's! Phil Oakey anyone?

Justleaveitblankthen · 01/05/2022 15:20

Hmm, where I am from it seems to be the other way round. 20 somethings' all have long hair with a centre parting and us 50 odd year olds have had the same fringe since we were two 😁
I look best when my fringe is parted to the right, but currently sporting this look due to a slightly thinning parting..

Anyone got any advice for fringe and glasses? Like pp I’d like to cover forehead wrinkles, but I worry it’s look bit busy.
I have no impulse control and hairdressing scissors 😂

Same here.

This is quite fun. I think all of them look better with fringes- the 2 women at the end in particular. They are very pretty to start with, but are stunning with a fringe.

My hairdresser always did a final fringe check once I'd popped my glasses back on. It helped to make sure it wasn't hanging over the top of them.

I started growing my fringe out in autumn 2019, thankfully just before lockdown as I would never have survived butchering my own fringe. It wasn't that horrific to grow it out, my hairdresser helped shape it and having a side parting also helped.

I'm now thinking about having it cut back in again though, I always think my forehead is huge, plus I think it adds a bit more character to my face. I'm 47 but I don't think ages matters.

I had a huge blunt fringe for years and it really suited me

sadly my hair has really thinned out and I don’t look great with it so just beware - sometimes your hair thins out without you noticing !!

linenalltheway · 01/05/2022 22:57

Fringes emphasise your jaw, i think

I had a fringe most of my younger years but find now it draws attention to my jowls
