I'm going to have to give up the hair dye, aren't I?

Had my hair cut and dyed today and for the second time now I think I've had a reaction to the dye.
I must admit I'd forgotten about this happening last time until the itch started this evening.
It's a constant itchiness along the hairline on my neck at the back that starts a few hours after the dyeing.
Last time it lasted about 24 hours.
I took an antihistamine earlier but it's still itching.

Does this mean I'm going to have to ditch the dye and embrace the grey? 😩

Try a different dye ?

Discovereads · 01/05/2022 00:11

You could look into natural hair dyes. They don’t have the chemicals like PPD that people most often react to. This company offers testers so you can check and see if you also react to these hair dyes.

I gave up hair dye years ago because of the same reason. Saved a fortune never looked back. Love my hair now so much healthier.

Usually have it done in a salon.
Are they likely to be able to offer an alternative?
Or are these for home use?

Same thing happened to me and I now use Leganza.
It's the best home hair colouring I've ever used, so easy and no itch.

I used to get mine dyed at the hairdressers with a sensitive hair dye but started using
Umberto Gianinni Flowerology ones during lockdown.

I had to give up the dye, it was irritating my scalp too much. Best decision ever, my hair grows so thick and fast now.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/05/2022 00:52

I think so. You probably have a PPD allergy, and that can escalate from mild irritation to something far more serious.

FollowYourFearlessHeart · 01/05/2022 00:56

It's not the end of the world if you have to ditch the dye. I did over lockdown but tbh it was probably a matter of time before I had a proper allergic reaction because I used to get really itchy too. I am now completely grey, get lots of compliments and my hair is in better condition than it has ever been.

It could be that they are not rinsing properly when they wash the dye out. It might be something simple like that.

LightningAndRainbows · 01/05/2022 07:13

I wouldn't tbh. It is seriously not worth the risk and you've been lucky it wasn't much worse this time.

picklemewalnuts · 01/05/2022 07:28

I switched to cap highlights when this happened to me. It's a good way to blend the transition to grey, at least.

Solosunrise · 01/05/2022 07:38

Same happened to me, and I found it a great excuse to embrace the grey!
I've had to change some of the colours I wear so as not to look washed out, but I love the low maintenance. Just a decent cut every 6 weeks.
