Creaseproof concealer just emphasises wrinkles

I need some advice from someone who understands makeup better than I do. I bought some Revolution Pro Creaseproof Concealer to cover up dark under eye shadows. The colour is perfect but the texture is weird and really strongly emphasises wrinkles that normally do not show up much at all. I look like an actress that’s been made up to look older than I am, almost as if I have had prosthetic wrinkles stuck on my face. What am I doing wrong?

You’re not moisturising enough I think. Do you put some moisturiser on before the concealer?

Shmithecat2 · 01/05/2022 00:07

What's your skin prep like?

DrNo007 · 01/05/2022 05:33

Yes I do moisturise before applying—I have dry skin and alternate between two moisturisers that otherwise keep my skin looking and feeling nice—don’t want to boast but I get a lot of compliments on my skin quality given I am in my early 60s.

But it doesn’t seem to solve the problem.

Just try another product. For what it's worth I too am older but I use concealer on my undereyes with a very light hand. I think it's better to have a hint of shadow showing than looking like I trowelled on concealer. But different products suit different people.

DrNo007 · 01/05/2022 07:59

Sweepingeyelashes can you tell me which product you use? I am happy to try another one.

Do you use a primer? Layer that on first, then dab on your concealer with the concealer applicator, and blend with a beauty sponge or brush. Set with a translucent powder over the top and that should do the job.
Also make sure your foundation isn't going right up to the eyes - this can cause creasing too.

There's a really good Wayne Goss video on YouTube how to apply concealer without the cakeyness. Alexandra Anele is another makeup YouTuber who is a concealer expert. Both are non fussy and irritating to watch. Just straight into the techniques.

DrNo007 · 02/05/2022 06:40

Ha, I had never heard of makeup primer so thank you! And I will watch the recommended videos. Many thanks—so good to be able to tap into the experience of ladies who know about these things!

Ayu concealer gets a huge amount of praise.

DrNo007 · 02/05/2022 07:37

Thanks, Ayu looks good!

I really like the charlotte tilbury magic vanish in the lightest colour (I think it's called fair). Technically it's a colour corrector but I use it like a concealer and it's fairly crease-proof on me. In my opinion, the Revolution conceal and fix ultimate coverage concealer is a very good dupe at a much cheaper price! It does depend what suits your skin though. Also put on a very small amount of concealer, minimal powder and moisturise beforehand (glossier do a good moisturising primer if you want a recommendation).

As ive got older, i find a lot of foundation and concealer just accentuates things. I think a lighter coverage that enhances radiance more flattering. Something to make the colour a bit more uniform and less dull, but definitely lighter coverage.
Maybe use a primer if you feel you want to smooth pores out

Also on to recommend the AYU brand. Susie is a fabulous makeup artist and her videos are so easy to follow. She's done several videos where she's used the products on her mum and aunt (both in their 60s) so you can see how it suits older skin and how best to apply etc. The under eye concealer and brush are excellent.

Lollypop701 · 02/05/2022 10:25

The maybelline one with sponge on top is great and loads of colour choice

lindyloo57 · 02/05/2022 17:38

I'm 61 i can't find a concealer that sits nice on my skin, I only need a tiny bit on inside corner of eyes for a bit of darkness, but nothing I have used work, they all go dry looking, I have watched so many YouTube videos of people my age saying how its done, I even went to a channel counter and had my makeup done, when I got home around 3 hours later, my under eyes where the concealer sits, looked as bad as when I do it, I use eye cream, I moisturise, I must have the driest under eyes ever.

DrNo007 · 02/05/2022 23:35

Some great advice on here, thanks everyone—I will follow up and @lindyloo57 I hope we both find a solution!

@DrNo007 do let me know when you find the magic formula.

Sweepingeyelashes · 05/05/2022 21:25

I use a really cheap brand, Essence Stay All Day 16h. It works well. I like this one because it's very light and the colour I use has a pink undertone which suits pale Irish skin. Basically all makeup has a yellow or pink tone. Anything labelled rose should have a pink undertone. If your skin has a pink tone it will look quite odd and orange in yellow based makeup.
