Emerald cut engagement ring?

ItsTooGoodYouKnow · 24/04/2022 23:05

I've recently got engaged and I quite like the style of emerald cut diamond for the ring.

Anyone have one or have any advice? It doesn't seem to be a mainstream style so a but tricky to find sone to try on.

Generally an emerald cut diamond would need to be very high quality over the 4 Cs as it’s an unforgiving cut. Any inclusions, or poor cut would show up more than in a brilliant, for example. If you have the funds, go for it! It’s gorgeous. Or perhaps look at Asscher cut which seems popular now.

Yes agree with the above.
Its inherently not as sparkly as there are fewer facets so you need to keep it clean and have a setting that makes that easy.
If you want a diamond wedding ring or an eternity ring in the future it’s much harder but not impossible to find a good match. I am actually happy that the wedding ring decision was made simple (and cheaper) for me.

have a look at Blue Nile for settings and sizes comparing the dimensions to something that might be easier to try on. If you like a certain size diamond in a plain setting on your finger then you should like the emerald cut too.

I had a princess cut solitaire. I ended up swapping it for a brilliant cut cluster.
Agree with pp - they need to be fabulous cut, colour and clarity and even then, don't sparkle as much as brilliant cut or cushion cut.
Agree with the pp about asscher cut if you're dead set on a square or rectangle shape?

slowsundays · 25/04/2022 08:39

I have an emerald cut. I adore my engagement and wedding rings but like PP have said, it's not inherently sparkly and quite unforgiving on the stone. Here's a bad quality photo:

Check out 77 Diamonds. They offer emerald cuts and are probably the cheapest. Alternatively if you want that shape but a bit more sparkle you could look for a millennium cut, it was sold by Goldsmiths around the year 2000 (so you’d be looking at buying vintage). It’s basically an emerald cut with added facets for more sparkle.

If you like emerald also have a look at cushion cut

ItsTooGoodYouKnow · 25/04/2022 18:27

@PlatinumBrunette thanks fir those tips

@Thinkle thanks I'll have a look on Blue Nile

@Eaumyword leaning towards rectangle at the moment with baguettes (I'm learning all the lingo!)
@slowsundays that's really lovely. How it looks is the most important to me, over how much it sparkles.

@Bolognia oh thanks! I hadn't heard of that cut

I have an engagement ring which has a fairly large emerald cut diamond with a smaller one each side. Art Deco style. I love it so much and much prefer it to brilliant cut or princess cut

DramaAlpaca · 25/04/2022 20:21

It's my favourite cut. If you can find a beautiful one, go for it.

PiscesSt · 25/04/2022 21:05

Emerald cut is gorgeous! I have an aquamarine. Yes I need to clean it often, but I love the cut, go for it!

beastiev · 25/04/2022 21:07

I have one & I love it. PPs was correct about the quality being more important, mine is very good quality so was very £££ for the size. It sparkles as a good cut but still not as sparkly as other cuts.

Appleblum · 26/04/2022 07:19

I'm in the market for one myself, they're gorgeous aren't they! Agree with what everyone else has said, and I think you really have to go big for this stone, too small and it becomes hard to admire the facets.

SalsaLove · 26/04/2022 07:27

This is mine, bought 12 years ago. It’s beautiful in person but doesn’t photograph very well. We got it at Pravins in Reading.

Sounds like mine. The middle stone is an emerald. I had the wedding ring made to sit around it properly.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/04/2022 09:22

I have an emerald cut diamond. It is a good quality stone which is important, as others have said. It was always the shape I was most drawn to. I have long fingers so the shape suits their length. I also like the slightly Art Deco look of it.

The Duchess of Cornwall has an incredible emerald cut engagement ring. Quite a few imitation styles on the market since she started wearing that.

My advice would be to find the stone and then get it set (as someone says, make sure you can get at it to clean it. I use a little pot of jewellery cleaning solution from John Lewis which comes with a tiny toothbrush to get under the setting and make the stone sparkle - soap, hand cream and just general environment dust etc quickly reduce the sparkliness

I also have one, I love it and I've just always loved the cut! It's a bit more high maintenance as people say, I clean it more often to keep the sparkle but I really like the shape.

Yes I was thinking of Camillas ring! Absolutely stunning.

tkwal · 26/04/2022 16:40

Emerald cut doesn't necessarily bring out the brilliance of decent diamonds. It is so named because it was designed to minimise the appearance of flaws (flora) common in most emeralds. Asscher cut is stunning but usually very expensive due to the quality of stones needed. Princess cut can be beautiful as a solitaire , elegantly cut and designed to maximise the brilliance of more affordable stones

Catnuzzle · 26/04/2022 16:45

Love emerald cut. I knew it was what I wanted. I like that they're a little unusual. Don't know anyone else with one.

I have an Asscher/square cut emerald. It’s my favourite shape, partly because it’s more unusual than the ubiquitous round brilliant. As a PP said, it does need a regular clean, but the fire and scintillation is amazing.

We found the diamond on James Allen and it was set by a U.K. jeweller.
