Toner (for hair)

If you get a toner when you get hair lightened at the hairdressers, what do you do to maintain it or top it up?

I always love the ashy/lilac tint I get from the toner my hairdresser uses on my highlights but it fades after a week or two. I do use blond/silver shampoo but it’s not as strong an effect.

can you buy hairdresser style toner to use at home or do you go back to the hair dresser just for a toner?

thank you.

(Hairdresser) most clients who want to maintain that strong toned look will come back for a toner in between appointments. Usually about 4 weekly. Some people like that look but can't afford it (understandably) and use things they buy in Superdrug etc. As long as they don't overdo it, or try to lighten it themselves it doesn't usually cause a problem.

Agree with @Ginandslippers

Obviously in a salon the products are different and you are paying for their expertise as well so much less likely to have any mistakes, but equally a lot of people do get on well with the super drug toners and actually I've used them on myself despite being a qualified professional 😂

When I had my hair lightened a few years ago I went to the hairdressers every other month for the toner and in-between i used a purple shampoo. I quite liked the lilac silver look so left it on a little bit longer to achieve that but not too long as it will turn purple so best to start off with a minute to begin with and extend from there if needed. I used fudge purple shampoo.

Brilliant. Thank you all. For some reason, I’d never noticed the option of “just” going in for a toner on hairdresser services list (menu??) but it’s good to know that it is very much a thing you can do!

also good to know that the budget options generally don’t harm either.

thank you!

I see it (going for a toner in between) as a bit like going for an infill for lashes or nails, you don't need the full service but it looks so much better if you do that top up. It's actually becoming a real common service because a lot of people get balayage or other highlighting techniques that don't need the same heavy maintenance as traditional highlighting techniques, but still have the same issue that highlights become yellow/brassy after a while and purple/silver shampoos can only do so much. For people with a fringe it's often a great time to do a quick fringe trim and a toner and they leave with that salon look in hardly any time, especially if they get a blow dry at the same time (and often heat styling as well). I often actually prefer that 'mid service' look than a fresh balayage. Fresh toner, older lightening, it just looks soo pretty.

I have balayage and I also leave my purple shampoo on a bit longer to keep the brassiness at bay.

Try Josh Wood!

I've started to use toner drops from shrine which you add to conditioner. Few options colour wise and I've been happy with the results.
