Does anyone use a smoothing keratin treatment at home as opposed to going to a salon?

And if so, what do you recommend?

I pay £190 for an in salon nano keratin treatment every 5 months or so. It's excellent and restores my frizzy hair to nice and smooth.

But it's quite pricey so I wondered if anyone had any home recommendations or are they just more hassle than they're worth? It takes around 2 and a half hours in the hairdressers

I do my own at home. It's not as amazing as a salon version, but that's possibly down to me getting used to it and not having that absolute wow feeling about it that I got the first few times.

It takes about 3 hours for me, but some of that is leaving thr solution to work etc, so you can do something else simultaneously.

I use the purple box on amazon.

Really sorry but please may I hijack your thread @HardRockOwl ? I had my first salon keratin treatment a week ago and it’s done nothing to my hair. All the comparison pics online just show the person’s hair once it’s been straightened just after the treatment. Do you have before treatment and after styling pics you wouldn’t mind posting (anonymised of course) so I can understand what it’s supposed to do/the wow moment that @TonkaTruckduck mentioned? I paid almost £400 as well (including the shampoo and conditioner which I hate). I’d be so grateful!

I wouldn't use it. Keratin treatments, salon or home, are damaging for hair and make it look flat and thin.

I got one one the back of a mumsnet post, I swear to god, I nearly carked it from the toxic fumes. Never again.

worked though ( for a few weeks!)

HardRockOwl · 22/04/2022 12:53

A nano keratin treatment contains no chemicals (bar the obvious fact they chemicals are everywhere including water!) and it repairs the hair.

The nano isn't a straightening treatment - it's a smoothing treatment

@WowStarsWow see this pic. Please bear in mind that my hair before was after an extension removal so was particularly bad! I had a good cut and the treatment

@WowStarsWow was it a nano keratin treatment? That specifically smooths and removed frizz. I pay £190 ish so £400 is shocking?

@nzeire that sounds horrible! No fumes with the treatment I have - can't smell a thing

beautiful hair (after!$
how long did it last?

MorrisZapp · 22/04/2022 13:30

I use the Wow treatment, the orange box that's all over Facebook etc. It's pretty good for a special occasion but it doesn't last weeks.

Takes me about an hour to do it. I get three uses out of one bottle, and I got the set on ebay. I chucked out the shampoo because its awful, I bought salt free shampoo in TK Maxx.

ParadiseLaundry · 22/04/2022 13:46

I used this one and was so impressed with it. It stayed smooth for months after first use. I've had two uses out of this one bottle so far and definitely have enough for another application. I've never had a salon application to compare it to though.

The only downsides are that my hair has lost a bit of its natural curl (expected really though) and it does get greasy a bit quicker but I only washed it once a week before hand anyway.

I've decided to just bite the bullet and I'm re-booked in at the salon. Better safe than sorry I suppose!

I had one done about 6 weeks ago and its been
ok but I am not sure I'd do it again. If it last 4 or so months I prob would but not if I habe to go back every 10-12 weeks. Not worth the money then, to me.
I have also found my hair gets greasier and I dont like the shampoo. So not sure. Mixed bag for me

WowStarsWow · 22/04/2022 17:39

@HardRockOwl thank you, I really appreciate it! Yes, the treatment was £295 and the shampoo and conditioner £96 - I live in an expensive area 😩
here are my photos:

  1. before treatment

  2. immediately after, straightened to within an inch of its life

  3. Yesterday, very roughly blow dried with a brush

  4. today after sleeping in a silk bonnet.

The silk bonnet has always made my hair smoother, but I thought blow drying was supposed to be easier? Any difference is minimal and outweighed by having to use sulphate free shampoo which makes my hair feel dirty (and I normally only wash every 4 days).
If I go back to the salon, what should I say? 😕
