Would I be mad to use this home highlighting kit??

Really want to brighten up my mousy hair and can't afford to get them done professionally at the moment. This kit has good reviews, it looks like you put the cap on and pull through. Has anyone used this one or similar?

Hmm if your hair is mousy naturally without any other dye on, then you might get a decent result, but it will need toning and you need to work quickly, the top of head will take quicker than the bottom. If your hair is uncoloured you won't need to keep the bleach on for long.

You need to make sure you are pulling hair from all over your head, not just the top also otherwise it has the potential to be very uneven!

Thanks, I don't have any colour on at the moment.

It can work out ok, pull fine strands through maybe every 3rd hole in the cap for a subtle effect, leave for 40 minutes until the hair looks as white as it gets. I did my roots in lockdown with a kit, it's a bit tricky getting the strands to pull through evenly.

My sisters and I used to do each others highlights with a cap when we were teenagers, my advice would be to buy a decent highlighting cap, if the cap in the box is cheap the colour could bleed onto the rest of your hair but I'd definitely go for it.
You will need someone to help you tho, doing the back will be difficult by yourself

My exH used this on my over a decade ago with no prior experience and literally everyone commented on how brilliant it looked /which hairdresser etc!? I was quite shocked tbh but as long as you follow instructions it works. Show us after!

I would watch some videos first - YouTube will have plenty. Roots process faster than ends, and you need toner (not sure if it comes in the pack).

I've used these for years. Echoing the PP who said don't use every hole on it, you might end up looking like you've bleached all your hair, instead of highlights.

I use a very thin paintbrush as well - I use the cap, take off immediately then use a paintbrush to make sure it's gone right down to the roots and do a few thinner pieces around the face. I have extremely fine hair though, wouldn't recommend this for beginners or those with thick hair.

Moochio · 22/04/2022 08:43

I would pull very thin sections through the cap personally and like PP said, don't use every hole

Moochio · 22/04/2022 08:43

Less is more in terms of the amount of hair, at least for the first go

Bluecheck679 · 22/04/2022 09:22

I use this regularly, no toner and it comes out great! My hair is mousy naturally. My top tips are the bleach will only be active for about an hour so don't mix it until you've pulled all the hair through the cap - that takes ages! Once the hair is through, pin it into 4 or 5 sections so it's easier to apply the bleach section by section. Have two boxes in just incase you need a second but I usually don't. If you want a big change then all the holes are fine but if you just want a few subtle lights I'd do every 2nd or 3rd like suggested by pp.

Bluecheck679 · 22/04/2022 09:24

Oh yes and don't rub it in as it'll bleed through the cap! I learned that the hard way...

RoyKentsChestHair · 22/04/2022 09:26

I bought this last night!! I wasn’t planning to use the cap though, just going to balayage it with some tin foil - will let you know how it works out. I’ve been paying £50 for roots and a few highlights so just started doing my own roots with a box dye instead and figured I could add some highlights myself too. Hope I don’t regret this!

DelphiniumBlue · 22/04/2022 12:47

I've doe it before, you need to be very light handed, pull through fewer strands than you think you need. You can always add more if you decide it's not enough.
